Mr Simms endeavoured to stop the runaway but by doing so became entangled in the shafts and harness, and was dragged a considerable distance on the road sustaining several cuts and bruises. He was rendered unconscious for a considerable time, but beyond a severe shaking and loss of two or three teeth ane the necessity for several stitches in the cuts no serious injury was received. From Yvonne Whittenbury nee Simms My memories of Groofy(X) Simms are few as I was only three and a bit when he died. I was told he really wanted all his sons to be fishermen and he nearly succeede three out of four.My dad Rick(John) was the youngest and didn't make it happen. Groofy (X) was a very determined man and he tried hard to each Rick. Everytime he took dad out in the boat he either got the lines tangled or fell over board much to Groofy(X) disgust. The ;ast time he took him out he fell between the fishing boat and a ketch and was nearly drowned and squashed, so he never went again. Rick really loved the sea like Groofy(X) but just waswn't cut out to earn his living from it. As we lived in Groofys(X) home I probably followed him around the place. I remember always standing in the doorway of the bathroom watching him shave and he used to dab shaving cream on mu nose. He (X) used to dose me up with Cod liver Oil which he took every da. Mum used to tell him off as she could smell it on my breath but he just said "Its good for her" and continued to give it to me. Groofy(X) always brought the fish heads home and told Mum to make soup for him only he ate it none of us liked it. I think Groofy(X) was a very hard grumpy old man, where as Dad(Rick) was a very kind and gentle man, must have taken after his Mother.
