Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and commanded by Maj. G. H. Forney. At the bombardment of Grand Gulf, MS (29 April 1863), the battalion was attached to Brig. Gen. John S. Bowen's Grand Gulf (MS) Defense Forces, and commanded by Lt. Col. G. H. Forney. At Champion Hill (16 May 1863) the unit was assigned to Brig. Gen. Lloyd Tilghman's (killed 16 May 1863) and Col.
