Note: Ruby and Belle went to John H. Sneed Seminary for Young Women, a boarding school, in Mobile, AL. She and Ruby would play pranks on the stuffy house mother. An evangelist came and spoke about giving their lives to Christ. Ruby and Minnie Belle both went forward. Belle moved away from the Lord, but reconciled with him before she died. Even though Ruby was short, she was a jumping center on the basketball team. After her first year at John H. Sneed, Ruby became an apprentice to a dressmaker in Mobile. Mobile has their own form of Maudi Gras, and this lady Ruby worked for made costumes for this occasion. Ruby learned how to make her own patterns and was a very good seamtress. While she was in Mobile, she became good friends with an English family and their son was very taken with Ruby. The father was a cotton broker and they were very well off. It was necessary to insure their cotton daily. One day, for some reason, they failed to do so. That night their warehouse burned down and they lost everything. After that, the young man dropped his friendship with Ruby. When she was about 21 or 22, Ruby went to Memphis and was working as a secretary for a man. She was looking for a better job and went to Plough Chemical Company on her lunch break for an interview. The Personnel Manager was out of the office, so Maury Priddy, the Office Manager, interviewed and hired Ruby as someone else's secretary. They worked a half of day on Saturdays. Eventually, Maury asked Ruby out to a movie. They were to meet at the Orpheum Theater at 2:00. After work, Ruby went and got her hair done and headed for the theater. She got their early and waited about five minutes. She was impatient and decided he wasn't going to show up and left. Maury arrived about five minutes after 2:00 and waited on Ruby for an hour. They didn't speak to each other for some time after that. One day Maury's secretary didn't show up for work, so he asked if he could borrow Ruby. He left some letters on the dictaphone for Ruby to type and in between the letters, he inserted sweet nothings. The next day when his secratary returned, she heard the romantic injections and the word got out of their secret office romance. Soon after they got married, Ruby got an infection and high fever. It turned out she had a diseased kidney and she was told she could never have children. She did have one daughter, Barbara. Ruby was a member of the Daughters of the United Confederacy. Ruby was very well liked. She celebrated her 100th birthday at her apartment in Bethesda, Maryland. Many friends came to visit. She was lucid until about the age of 98. She would remember things from her childhood like the story of the cave. There was a cave on her parents property in Lewisville, MS and they had their picture taken by a professional photographer at the cave site. The picture was dated 1904 and Aunt Ruby was about 10-12 years old at the time. The cave had a cool stream running through it and they would store food in there to keep it cool.
