  RESIDENCES
Thomas Jefferson Tucker lived in Winston County, Mississippi from his birth in 1844 through 1870. For a brief while in the early 1870s he moved to Shelbyville, Tennessee where his son, Ira, was born. The family then moved to Meridian, Mississippi in the mid-1870s, remaining there until 1880. Two of the daughers were born in Meridian, Fannie Mary Lee and Edna Estelle. Next they can be found living in McNairy County, Tennessee on the 1880 Federal Census. By 1894 the family had moved to San Marcos, Hays County, Texas. According to the Travis County Tax Rolls and the Austin City Directories of the period, Thomas lived in Austin,Texas in 1905, the same year that he died. His son, Ira, lived with him at the same Austin address, his daughters, Edna Tucker-Rowden and Ida Tucker-Thomas, had been living in Austin for a few years preceding. Neither Thomas nor Ira lived in Austin before 1905, and Ira was not living there in 1906. It is assumed that Thomas went to Austin seeking medical attention and died soon thereafter.
  BURIAL INFORMATION
In June, 2013, I discovered the official Death Record for my GG-Grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Tucker, in the Austin History Center. Although family records indicated that he had been buried in Austin, my search for his death record had proven extremely difficult. Fortunately the Austin History Center had the only COMPLETE record of burials at Oakwood, not just those with gravestones. Sure enough, Thomas was in the original burial ledger. He was buried in Section 4, Lot 996. A 'Lot' in old Oakwood was 25' X 30' feet and contained around 8-10 burials or so. I visited the cemetery and quickly located Lot 996. There were 6 headstones (4 Schmidt, 1 Massey, 1 Pursley) and 2 unmarked graves. One of the unmarked graves is to the left of Myrtle Pursley, the other is right of Elizabeth Massey. We will never know which one belongs to Thomas, because as expected he had no gravestone. My guess is that he is buried on the left of Pursley because Pursley was also buried in 1905. I have included photos of the Lot and a photo of the ledger entry. Below is a transcript of the ledger entry which can be found on the Austin History Center's website: http://www.austinlibrary.com/ahc/oakwood.htm

Close up of the two unmarked graves in Section 4, Lot 996. It is assumed that Thomas Jefferson Tucker is in the grave left of Myrtle Pursley, marked by the orange flag, since Ms. Pursley was also buried in 1905. During the American Civil War, political prisoners and prisoners of war were often released upon taking an "oath of allegiance". Lincoln's Ten percent plan featured an oath to "faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the union of the States thereunder" as a condition for a Presidential pardon. During Reconstruction, retroactive loyalty oaths were proposed by Radical Republicans, which would have barred former Confederates and Confederate sympathizers from federal, state, or local offices. Thomas J. signed the following: United States of America I, Thomas J. Tucker of the County of Winston, State of Mississippi, do solemnly swear, in the presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the Union of the States thereunder; and then I will in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all acts of Congress passed during the existing rebellion with reference to slaves, so long and so far as not repealed, modified, or held void by Congress or by decision of the Supreme Court; and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all proclamations of the President made during the existing rebellion having referred to ???? so long and so far as not modified or declared void by decision of the Supreme Court so help me God. (in had writing) and that I will ....... during the war. Subscribed abd sworn to before me at Louisville this 18 day of July, A. D. 1864. Signed A. R. Pruett, Capt Washington??
