Notes
a. Note:   Joe had black hair and wore glasses. The records at the Winston Cty Courthouse were burned and Joe had to write to the State Registrar of Vital Statistics, Felix J. Underwood, M.D. in Jackson MS to substantiate his birth by a delayed birth certificate. This was also verified by William A. Schoolar, 1220 Azalia, Memphis, TN on May 14, 1941. They lived as neighbors about 1890. (He doesn't say where). This information was verified by US Census of 1900 and a life insurance policy with Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York (Policy #2054360) obtained in 1913. Joe Jr. was living at 1026 Forrest Avenue in June 1941 when this certificate was requested. William A. Schoolar may have been related to Rosa L. Schoolar who married his brother, Jimmy. In December 1907, Joe borrowed $60 from M. A. Stark. For collateral he put up on Bay horse named Bill about 10 years old also one buggy and harness. The note was due and payble November 1, 1908 with 10% interest. He paid M. A. Stark back December 30, 1907. Joe and Gertie lived their early years of marriage in Electric Mills, Kemper Cty, MS. This is where the first electric saw mill in the state was located, thus the name Electric Mills. Joe worked at the Sumter Lumber Company. [I do have a bit on Sumter Lumber Cty The mill was built in 1911 at Electric Mills. Before that, the mill was at Sumter, AL, but that mill burned in early 1911, and the owners decided to rebuild the mill closer to their remaining timber holdings. The mill ran until 1941. They logged extensively in Kemper, Noxubee, and Winston Counties. There was a book done years ago (1971, I think) by Eva Mae May on Electric Mills. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to track down the many photos she had used. I know they have to be out there somewhere! I also have a bit on the mill at D'Lo. It was built in 1916 by the Finkbine Lumber Cty, who also had a large mill at Wiggins. They had many miles of logging railroad into Rankin Cty. They finally shut down in 1929-30. There were two excellent books written by a friend of mine, Gil Hoffman, on sawmills in MS. "Dummy Lines Through the Longleaf" covers the sawmills in Lincoln Cty. "Steam Whistles in the Piney Woods" is about the large mills in Forrest and Lamar Counties. Both give very good descriptions of life in the sawmills and logging camps. Best wishes, Tony Howe ] Joe, as he was called, was an engineer. On April 12, 1918, Joe received a letter from a friend, C. C. Rob..Unknown? It said: "Dear Joe: Your letter read this a.m. and noted would say in reply that I can use you now in the Engine Room Day Time. How ever you may have to go to work at 5 o'clock in the a.m. and come off about 4 in the afternoon. We have an Aleis? 200 KW Turbine and a small Harrisburg for night lighting and Sundays. The job will pay you $100.00 per mo., But you get paid off weekly. Now I have written you instead of wiring so I might give you a better idea of the job so. So if you can come in the next few days wirem me and I will hold the place for you. Regards to Mrs. Tucker. Yours Truly, C. C. Robertson" After they moved to Memphis in 1927. They lived in about 4 different rental houses before John bought the house on Forrest Avenue in 194?. When they lived on Thomas Avenue, they had a club house in the back. The James Thrailkil's were their neighbors. Joe walked from Forrest Avenue to Fisher Body on Thomas Blvd. to work because they didn't have a car. They had a dog named Trinket at 1026 Forrest. Trinket liked to chew gum. He would wait for Joe to come home and Joe would give it to him. Joe was known for making a very good eggnog at Christmas with a little kick to it. Joe died at home at 1026 Forrest Avenue, Memphis, TN 38105 Census: 1900 Federal Census Winston Cty, MS Beat 3, E. D. 100, Enumerated by Michael A.
