a. Note:   t and Jaques Bentyn purchased from the Keskaechquerem Indian tribe, later know as the Canarsie Indians, 930 acres of land in the Gowanus area of what became know as Brooklyn. By deed dated 26 December 1639, Bentyn sold his share of the land to Bennet. Various sources mention that Bennet was a cooper by trade, and in primary sources is sometimes referred to as William Adriaensen the cooper. In November 1642 Bennet also purchased property, including a dwelling and brewhouse, in New Amsterdam (now Manhattan), fronting the East River near Maagde Paetje (Maiden Lane). Bennet's ancestors are documented in the recently published book, "William Adriaense Bennet, Descendants and Related Families" c. 1998 by Kenneth A. Bennett, published by Gateway Published Company.
