Note: From the book, "Look to the Rock...the Urness/Barsness Episode" by Ann Gesme Urness (Cedar Falls, Iowa), 413 pages, copyright 1988, recorded with the Library of Congress Mildred Genevieve was Herman and Otelia's eighth child. She was born February 6, 1918 and baptized at the Vermont Lutheran Church March 24, 1918. Hans and Christina Urness, Thelma Dybdahl and Alfred Erickson were her sponsors. When she was 14 years old, she was confirmed. At 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 1941 she married Orville Halverson at the Lutheran parsonage in Mount Horeb. According to the Dane Co. News, a 6 o'clock dinner was served and later that evening a large number of relatives and friends gathered at the Barsness home for a wedding shower. Mildred and Orville live at Lone Rock, Wisconsin. They have five children and four grandchildren. OBIT - MOUNT HOREB - Mildred Halverson, age 81, died on Friday, October 22, 1999 at a Madison hospital. The former Mildred Barsness was born on February 6, 1918, the daughter of the late Herman and Otelia (Erickson) Barsness. Mildred was married on December 6, 1941 to Orville Halverson who preceded her in death on July 6, 1992. Mrs. Halverson loved to make lefse, tell stories and baby sit. She was always thinking of others and was a volunteer for Respite. Mildred was a member of the Vermont Lutheran Church. Survivors include three sons: Neil (Robert) of Cottage Grove, Ross (Theresa) of Lone Rock and Perry (Rebecca) of Mt. Horeb; two daughters, Carol (Stanley) Erickson of Hollandale and Julie (Randy) Parker of Mt. Horeb; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four step grandchildren; two brothers, Orval of Sauk City and Harvey of Black Earth. Mildred was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Marvin and Albert and two sisters, Gladys Topper and Ruby Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at VERMONT LUTHERAN CHURCH. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 25, 1999 at the ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME in Mt. Horeb. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
