Boe, Pastor Hans Erickson was born in Vermont Township, Wisconsin, January 31st, 1858. His parents were Erick and Carrie Erickson (Nybraaten) He grew to manhood in his paternal home, and in 1881 at the age of 24 he followed the example of so many others, and went west, coming to this neighborhood where he has resided ever since. In 1882 he entered into wedlock with Delia Peterson of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. To this union sixteen children were born of which fifteen are living, one having died in infancy. Shortly after their marriage, they acquired the land that afterwards has been their homestead. They also Soon became affiliated with the Church and here all the children have been baptized and confirmed. The children, with the exception of a son residing in California, were all present to lament the loss of a dear parent together with the bereaved mother. Mr. Erickson had throughout life been well and strong until just a short time before his death, when he became subject to heart trouble from which he at times suffered quite severely. He was a delegate to the Circuit meeting held at Lake Preston a week ago. Rev. Boe rode with Mr. and Mrs. Erickson over to Lake Preston on the Wednesday preceding his passing. In going he informed Rev. Boe about his condition, saying that he could expect to drop off at most anytime. He enjoyed the meeting very much, the topic for discussion being "The invitation to the Marriage of the King's Son." The end was nearer than expected. Last Tuesday morning as they went to call him for breakfast, they found that he had passed away during his sleep. His demise had been without the least struggle - just slept away. Again a reminder to all of us, that in an hour ye think not the Son Of Man cometh. It is certainly a comfort to all of us and especially to the bereaved, to know that he was so well aware of his condition and did expect to pass just as he did. May the good Lord who has given us promise that he will be the stay of the Widow and the Father of the fatherless, comfort and strengthen you in your bereavement, and grant you and all of us a blessed meeting in that home above, where sin and death is forever barred, when they who have parted in tears shall again meet rejoicing and no one shall take our joy away. God bless you. Besides his widow he leaves fifteen children, and 33 grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Anne Hillestad.
  Notes by Neal Erickson
Actually, when I was asked to make some notes about Grandpa Erickson, it was somewhat of a challenge. He was a hard working family man. He was a common, down to earth farm person with a large family. He took care of his chores, mended fences, scolded the boys and chastised the girls. He went to town for supplies, went to church and had an occasional luxury of some type. He was well respected in the area and would never back down, even in his later years, from the taunts of over zealous bullys as some found out. He was part of the community and worked on many projects and on many committees. One of his pride and joys was the radio. He would get the news and the markets until the crackle in the ear phones or the run down battery would get the best of him. His skills as a carpenter were many . I am sure he built the farm home and worked on it whenever time permitted. I remember him coming to Sioux Falls and working on a house for us, when I was little. I cut my finger on his draw knife and I was scolded for that. I don't believe I ever saw him loose his temper in later years, except once, when I stuck his hammer in a fresh cow pie. Not really my fault, he tempted me by devious methods for fun. Wonder why he kept old Sheps fur and hide up in the attic?? At the time of his passing he was in remarkable physical condition as the Funeral Director attested to, except for his heart. He was a good friend to all and loved by his family and his grandchildren.
