Prior to World War II, Frank sold Maytag washing machines at his appliance store in Hays, Kansas. During The Great Depression in the 1930s most people couldn't afford to buy this luxury labor-saving machine. To help, Frank would install a machine in a customer's home with a coin machine attached to the washing machine. When the family wanted to do a load of laundry, they would pay with coins in the coin machine. The accumulated money was applied toward the purchase of the washing machine.
