Notes
a. Note:   Family roots traced to Bruflat in Etnedal, which is located in the Valdres Valley of Oppland Co., Norway.
Siri was born in Norway in 1850; she was orphaned and left Norway when very young. It is believed that she came to America in about 1860 with her sister, Marit, who was married to Anders Monson, an early settler in Vermont. Twelve children were born to John and Siri. (Note: People in Norway were identified by their given name with the father?s name plus "son" or "datter." A third name was often added which indicated their place of residence.) ___________________________ Don't know if you remember me, but I wrote the Urness/Barsness book. Although I haven't done much with the Barsness family for the past 25 years, I discovered that I had the wrong date for the birth of my great grandmother, Sara, who married John Barsness. I think you are about the only Barsness descendant who is interested, so I want you to know what happened.
Some of the church records from 1849 and forward for a number of years, for the Bruflat church in Etnedal, Norway, were destroyed by the Nazis during WW II. Those were the books that would have contained Siri/Sara's baptism reocrds. They would also have contained the death records of her parents, both of whom died before about 1860, as well as the emigration records showing when Siri/Sara left Norway to come to America with her sister's famly, Marit and Andrew Monsen.
Knowing that some of the Etnedal records had been destroyed, I contacted a Norwegian researcher to see if she could find Siri's baptism record. She sent me the dates I included on page 286 of the book. Many years later, whle researching the surviving church records for Etnedal, I found that the chld baptized "Siri" and born in 1847, had died at the age of 11 months on June 5, 1848. So our Siri was born after that time since she was named for a deceased sibling -- maybe born in 1849 or 1850.
Siri and John Barsness were married June 15, 1866, when John was 30 and Siri much younger. Grandma (Christina Urness) was their oldest child, born March 21, 1867 - and she always claimed that her mother was only 16 when she was married, and 17 when Grandma was born. Without the Norwegian church records there is no way to be certain of Siri Barsness' birthdate, but I know the 1847 date is wrong.
Now are you thoroughly confused? I hope not, but thought you should know that the date in the book for Siri's birth is not correct. Are you still researching?
Regards, Ann Urness Gesme, May 19, 2013
