a. Note:   Otelia was the sister of Alfred Erickson. He married Selena O. Topper. Otelia was a homemaker. She had a well-known reputation as an excellent cook. For many years, she was an active member of the Vermont Church Ladies Aid.
  December 15, 1962 THE CAPITAL TIMES - BLACK EARTH - Mrs. Herman Barsness of Black Earth is Dead Mrs. Herman Barsness, 82, Black Earth, died Friday in a Madison hospital. She suffered a stroke on Wednesday. The former Otelia Erickson was born in Vermont township and lived in the area all her life. She and her husband farmed on the Barsness homestead near Black Earth until his death in 1950. She was a member of the Vermont Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. John Topper, Mt. Horeb; Mrs. Aldro Johnson, Sauk City and Mrs. Orville Halvorson, Wiota; five sons, Albert and Harvey, both of Mt. Horeb, and Ralph, Marvin and Orval, all of Black Earth, 38 grandchildren and 60 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Vermont Lutheran Church, near Black Earth. The Rev. Hector Gunderson of Lake Edge Lutheran Church, Madison, former Black Earth pastor, will officiate, and burial will be in the Vermont Church cemetery. Friends may call at the Schanel funeral home, Black Earth, after 2 p.m. Sunday.
