Notes
a. Note:   Her death certificate lists Elisha and Eleanor Gilbert as her parents. She may have been adopted by them. In the 1860 census Ruth and Nancy Fagin are living with this Gilbert family. Sarah Ann married Lewis S. Donham on September 20, 1850. The 1850 census for the Fagin family was taken Sept. 19, 1850. Ann Fagin, 16 yrs old is listed as a daughter of the Stephen Fagin family in Perry township, Clay Co., IN. In the 1860 census, sisters Ruth and Nancy Fagin are living with the Elisha Gilbert family. Was Sarah Ann Gilbert really Sarah Ann Fagin? Sarah was born June 1833, and would be 17 in Sept. 1850, not 16; however, censuses often have incorrect ages. Unless more proof is found, she will remain Sarah Ann Gilbert.

  62. Lewis Singleton DONHAM. Son of Abel DONHAM & Elizabeth FERGUSON. Born in Clermont Co., OH. Died after 1855 in Indiana. He first married Sarah Ann GILBERT, daughter of Jedediah GILBERT & Mary LINDSEY. Died after 1855. < INCORRECT They had the following children: i. Benjamin DONHAM ii. William DONHAM iii. John W. DONHAM iv. Mary Etta DONHAM He second married Sarah FAGIN, 6 November 1828 in Clermont Co., OH. _____ end of 62. ______ my note: HIS OBIT STATES HE WAS MARRIED ONLY ONCE. - jst
Abel and Elizabeth (Ferguson) Donham had a son named Lewis. My note: He was not the same Lewis whose parents were Abel and Elizabeth (Ferguson) Donham. This Lewis was the GRANDSON of Abel and Elizabeth (Ferguson) Donham. This Lewis's parents were John and Susanna 'Susan' (Reece) Donham. - jst Evidence points to Ruth and Nancy (and maybe Sarah) being the daughters of Stephen Fagin and his wife Ann Eliza (Donham) Fagin. For a time they lived with Elisah Gilbert and his wife Eleanor (Ferrell) Gilbert. More will be revealed.

This afternoon all that was mortal of the late Lewis Donham was laid in its last repose in the little Cade cemetery near Cory. The death of Mr. Donham marked the passing of one of the first settlers of Clay county, and one of its best and most generous citizens. His generosity prevented him from dying the richest man in the county, as at one time he owned the largest farm in the county. However, he helped his friends whenever he could, and oftentimes he was compelled to pay large sums because of the falseness of some friend. He was 82 years old, and was a native of Ohio. However, he came to this county with his parents when he was but 12 years old, hence he has been a resident of Clay county for seventy years, and certainly there was no one better known in the county than Mr. Donham. He was married but once, his wife dying about twenty years ago. He leaves three children, Mrs. M. H Young, of Harmony; John Donham of near Cory, and Benjamin Donham of Mississippi. Mr. Donham was a farmer and progressive one in spite of his advanced age. He owned one of the first threshing outfits in the county and was quick to see the advantage of modern machinery in farming. The funeral this afternoon occurred at the family residence and was largely attended. ___________________________________
