Note: Thomas Tom Collins, Sr., son of Zachariah Collins, Sr. and Edna Burton Collins was born about 1812 in Adair County, Kentucky and died about 1875 in Adair County, Kentucky. His parentage was established in the court records from the estate of Zachariah Collins, Sr., who died intestate. Aaron Collins and Catharine, his wife; Daniel Aaron and Anna, his wife; Killion Aaron and Elizabeth, his wife; Thomas Collins and Nancy Ann, his wife; and Nancy Collins inherited one-third of the estate of Zachariah Collins, Sr. (Adair County, Kentucky, Deed Book K, pgs. 260-261). On 26 Jan 1839, Aaron Collins and Catharine, his wife; Daniel Aaron and Anna, his wife; Killion Aaron and Elizabeth, his wife; Thomas Collins and Nancy Ann, his wife; and Nancy Collins granted, bargained and sold to Samuel Wheat an undivided interest, right and title to which they were entitled as the heirs at law of Zachariah Collins, Sr. (Adair County, Kentucky, Deed Book K, pgs. 259-261) The Scott Family by James Willard Scott, 1993, p. 80, lists Thomas middle name as Josiah. In that book, James concludes that Zachariah Collins, Sr., Thomas grandfather, was the son of Josiah Collins II. He cites no documentation to support this claim and it has been extensively researched by myself and others. To date the only documentation found has Thomas middle initial A. As a result of James book, many researchers incorrectly changed Thomas A. Collins name to Thomas Josiah Collins. In that book, James concluded that Zachariah Collins, Sr., Thomas father, was the son of Josiah Collins II. Josiah Collins II established a friendship with Daniel Boone. Josiah Collins II accompanied Daniel Boone for the purpose of recording the events surrounding the opening of the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap in the Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky and kept a daily journal. James Willard Scott also concluded that Josiah returned to North Carolina where he married a full blooded Indian and had a son, Zach Collins, in 1780. He cites no documentation to support this claim and it has been extensively researched by myself and others. To date no documentation has been located to support this claim, but as a result of James conclusion, many researchers changed Thomas Collins name to Thomas Josiah Collins. It is believed that James Willard Scott creatively changed Thomas' name to give more credibility to his claim that Zachariah Collins, Sr. was the son of Josiah Collins. This claim has also proven to be inaccurate. Tom married Nancy Ann Blakey, daughter of William Field Blakey and Catherine Hannah Blakey, on 30 Dec 1832 in Adair County, Kentucky. Nancy was born about 1819 in Russell County and died between 1860 and 1870. (Kentucky County Marriages, 1873-1965; death certificate of Timothy F. (Arthur Hadley citing Lizzie Jane Turner Reece) After Nancys death, Tom married Mahala Womack, daughter of Jesse Womack and Delilah Blair Womack. Mahala was born between 1823 and 1828. The 1870 U.S. Census lists Mahala Collins, age 42, residing in the household of Thomas Collins, age 59, with Thomas children by Nancy Ann Blakey. According to that census, Mahala was born about 1828. Mahala Collins, age 57, is listed in the 1880 U.S. Census residing in the household of Thomas Collins, age 68.
