a. Note:   Carl Edmond Askins, 94, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, February 11, 2011 at his daughters home in Fairview, Oklahoma.
  Born April 26, 1916 in Winfield, Kansas, he was the son of Ed and Sara Ella (Miller) Askins. He was raised and received his education in Cowley County.
  Carl was united in marriage to Iris Pearl Coombs on September 29, 1937, at the Hackney Baptist Church. The couple made their home in the Winfield area where Carl worked as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. In 1944 he joined the United States Navy, proudly serving his country on the USS Commencement Bay in World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on October 16, 1945 at which time he returned to the Winfield area. Upon returning home Carl worked for the Walnut Township as well as farming land east of Winfield. He then went to work for the City of Winfield where he remained for over 24 years until retiring as the Superintendent of the Street Department in 1979.
  He was a member of the Millington Street Baptist Church in Winfield. He enjoyed camping, traveling, and spending the Winters in south Texas and Arizona.
  His family includes: His son: Wayne Askins and wife, Kathi of Copan, OK; His daughters: Geri Palmer and husband, Jack of Arkansas City; Lila Platter of Fairview, OK; His daughter-in-law: Donna Askins of Mulvane; His 25 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren: and several nieces and nephews.
  In addition to his parents and wife Carl was preceded in death by his brother, Walter, his sisters, Hazel Spengler and Gladys Morgan, his son, Donald Askins, his son-in-law, Jerry Platter, and two grandsons, Leland Askins and Kevin Palmer.
  Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday afternoon from 3 P.M. to 7 P.M. The family will greet visitors from 3 to 5 that afternoon.
  A memorial has been established in Mr. Askins' name for Hospice Circle of Love in Enid, Oklahoma. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
