a. Note:   Iris Pearl Askins, 92, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Tuesday evening, January 18, 2011 at Fairview Regional Medical Center in Fairview, Oklahoma.
  Born September 13, 1918 in Winfield, Kansas, she was the daughter of Evert C. and Pearl F. (Jones) Coombs. She was raised and received her education in Cowley County.
  Iris was united in marriage to Carl E. Askins on September 29, 1937 in Hackney. The couple made their home in the Winfield area where Iris was a homemaker and helped on the family farm. She later went to work at St. Mary’s as a nurse’s aid. She then went to work for William Newton Hospital until her retirement in 1977.
  She was a member of the Millington Street Baptist Church in Winfield. She enjoyed painting, crocheting, sewing, camping, and traveling. She also enjoyed spending the Winters in south Texas and Arizona.
  Her family includes: Her husband: Carl Askins of the home; Her son: Wayne Askins and wife, Kathi of Copan, OK; Her daughters: Geri Palmer and husband, Jack of Arkansas City; Lila Platter of Fairview, OK; Her daughter-in-law: Donna Askins of Mulvane; and Her 25 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren.
  In addition to her parents Iris was preceded in death by two infant brothers, her sister, Anita Miller, her son, Donald Askins, her sons-in-law, Jerry Platter, and two grandsons, Leland Askins and Kevin Palmer.
  Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday afternoon from 1 to 5.
  Memorials have been established in Mrs. Askins’ name for Millington Street Baptist Church in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
