  Robert J. Beals, Ph. D., 80
  EAST LIVERPOOL - Robert J. Beals, Ph. D., 80, of Smithfield Street, died at 9:58 p.m., Saturday, February 28, 2004, at The Medical Center in Beaver, Pa. Born in Decatur, Ill., on Nov. 12, 1923, he was the son of the late William Jennings Bryan and Hesper Helen Buffenmeyer Beals.
  Graduating from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 1947 with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering, he also earned his master of science degree in ceramic engineering in 1950 and doctor of philosophy in ceramic engineering with minors in analytical chemistry and glass technology in 1955 from the University.
  He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he served as vice president from 1973 to 1975 and treasurer 1975 to 2004.
  Dr. Beals held several positions with the University of Illinois, including assistant in ceramic engineering, 1947-1952; instructor in ceramic engineering, 1952-1955; assistant professor of ceramic engineering, 1955-1960; and associate professor of ceramic engineering, 1960-1962. From 1962 to 1969, he was associate ceramist, metallurgy division, and group leader, mechanical properties, at Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Ill., and was technical director of The Charles Taylor Sons Co. in Cincinnati from 1969 to 1971. He joined he Hall China Co. in East Liverpool as director of research and development in 1971 and held that position until 2001.
  He became a member of the American Ceramic Society in 1947; a Fellow in 1965; a Distinguished Life Member in 1990, served as a member of the Board of Trustees, 1974-1997; treasurer, 1978-1980; president, 1982-1983; Ceramic Foundation, Board of Directors, 1995-2000. Joining the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers in 1952, Dr. Beals was president, 1968-1969; trustee, 1974-1977, Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) representative and program visitor for Ceramic Engineering, 1985-1990, NICE representative to Board of Directors, Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), 1992-1998.
  Other organizations to which he belonged include: Ceramic Educational Council: member 1949; vice president, 1966-1968; Keramos Fraternity (Ceramic Honorary): member, 1949; national president, 1966-1968. Professional Interfraternity Conference: president, 1968-1970; Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology: NICE representative of EAC, 1985-1990 (Team Chair for 13 Universities); EAC Executive Committee, 1989-1990; ABET Board of Directors, 1992-1998.
  Dr. Beals received Professional Honors from the American Ceramic Society: Fellow in 1965, Distinguished Life Member in 1990; Pittsburgh Section, ACerS: Albert Victor Bleininger Memorial Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Field of Ceramics, 1994; National Institute of Ceramic Engineers: Arthur Frederick Greaves-Walker Award in 1998 and Fellow of NICE in 2002; Keramos Fraternity: A. F. Greaves-Walker Roll of Honor in 1970.
  His military record began with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1942 to 1944, and continued at the U.S. Military Academy, 1944-1945; Illinois Army National Guard, 1949-1951 and 1954-1969 Master Sergeant to Major, Corps of Engineers; Ohio Army National Guard, 1969-1975, Major and Lt. Colonel, Corps of Engineers. His final assignment was Commanding Officer, 112th Engineer Battalion, Brook Park, Ohio.
  Active in the Sigma Phi Delta Fraternity since February 14, 1943, Dr. Beals served as president, Delta Chapter, 1945-1946; Eastern Province Councillor, 1950-1952; Grand President, 1952-1974; executive secretary, 1974-1998; Grand Old Man of Sigma Phi Delta, 1982; received the Professional Achievement Award, 1999; Sigma Phi Delta Foundation Director, 1991-2003.
  He was active in Rotary International, becoming a member of the East Liverpool Rotary Club in 1984 and served as secretary, 1987-1989, 1991-1999, 2000-2004; president, 1990-1991; governor, District 6650, 1999-2000; district treasurer, 2001-2001; fellow, Benefactor and Major Donor, Rotary International.
  Memberships in community organizations include: Boys Scouts of America, Columbiana Council, vice president; East Liverpool Area Chamber of Commerce; Board of the American Red Cross; Columbiana County (Ohio) Progress Council; chairman, Business-Education Coordinating Council, East Liverpool High School; Carnegie Public Library, Board of Trustees, 1996 -2004 and president, 1999 to 2004.
  Survivors include his wife at home, Lois I. Finley Beals, whom he married Sept. 14, 1952; two daughters, Mrs. David (Catherine B.) Mekus of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. Joseph (Nancy M.) Quimby of Poland, Ohio; and a son, Robert J. Beals II and his wife Robin of Jonesborough, Tenn. Two sisters, Mrs. Helen Ilene Ditty and Mrs. Eugene (Norma Jean) Swinford, both of Decatur, Ill., also survive, as well as seven grandchildren, Stephanie Lynn Mekus, Adrienne Marie Mekus, Savannah Finley Beals, Sawyer Ruble Jennings Beals, Saxton Sutherland Delaney Beals, Zachary Samuel Quimby and Eric Bryan Quimby.
  Friends may call at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday
  Pastor Wayne Niemi, assisted by the Rev. Gary Schreckengost, will conduct services at St. John Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 3, 2004. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group.
