Notes
a. Note:   [reubenaskins3.ged]
1830 I can't tell where this John is. He should have 2 males and 3 females under 10, an d 1 female over 10. The John in Knox Co. OH on page 93/282 fits this profile pretty well, bu t so does Jonathan Askins. These two men are about the same age (in 1850 Jonathan was "58" a nd John was "52" and they married near the same time (Jonathan to Lavina 21 Oct 1819 and Joh n abt 1821). Jonathan is the only Askins in the 1820 Knox Co. OH census, but apparently Joh n was there by 1840, while Jonathan had moved on to Shelby Co. IL by that time. By 1850 Jona than was living in Effingham Co. IL and John was in Fayette Co. IL. The census would indicat e that Jonathan and Lavina had 2 or 3 sons and 3 daughters, as well as raising the 3 young da ughters that Lavina brought to their 1819 marriage.
  1840 Knox Co. OH census (p 264 Hilliar Twp) lists John Askins with 1 male under 5, 2 aged 5-1 0, 1 10-15, 1 15-20, and 1 40-50; 3 females under 5, 2 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 20-30, and 1 30-40 . So 5 sons and 7 daughters if all these children are his.
1850 Fayette Co. IL census (p 394 #107) lists John Askins 52 NC; Elizabeth 47 NC; James 18; J ackson 16; Isaac 14; Mary 12; and Martha A. 10, all born Ohio. They evidently moved to IL so metime after 1840. Next door was Jesse Askins 28 OH and wife Mary 18 IL. [I think Jesse was one of their olde r children as he is too young to be the son of Reuben and Elizabeth Harris Askins.] Only 8 of his children were living in 1860 when his part of Reuben's estate was partitione d , 1/8 of 1/9 going to each of these: James, Isaac, Jackson, William, Lucinda Lee, Elizabet h Askins now dead, Nancy Hooper and Mary Hall. The following brides and groom have "John" as an identified and consenting father in their ma rriage application, but we weren't sure which man was meant until the Petition for Partitio n was found. Lucinda Askins, estimated born abt 1823, md John Lee in 1842 in Fayette Co. IL; died bef 1850 . Nancy Askins, b abt 1828, md Matthew Hooper in 1844 in Fayette Co. IL; died aft 1880 in Arkan sas. William Askins, b Mar 1829, md Zilpha Hicks in 1848 in Fayette Co. IL; died 1912 in Shelby Co . IL.
Since the Nancy who married Matthew Hooper is identified in her marriage record as the daught er of John, that makes the one marrying Phillip Henson the daughter of someone else. Who e lse was having daughters that early?? George was, but his daughters are named in his will. H e does have a Nancy, but if they are listed sequentially by age, she would be too young to ma rry in 1842. And Jonathan was, so he is the most likely candidate to be her father.
