Note: K-20 NARCISSE LESSARD/NELSON LASSER Narcisse was born 24 May 1835 at St-Antoine-de-Padoue, Rivière du Loup, Québec, Canada. He married Marie-Catherine LaFreniere 21 September 1858 at St. Paulin, Maskinongé, Québec Province, Canada. Their children, through 1866, were baptized at St-Joseph-de-Beauce, Maskinongé Co., Québec. Numerous family stories state that Nelson came to Michigan early, certainly by 1865 when he was a log drive leader on the Muskegon River. His appearance in the 1870 census is under a mangled interpretation of his name. This record indicates that Delia (Eva) was actually born in Canada in 1869.

Narcisse Lessard has been in Muskegon since 1855. He is one of the older citizens of the city. He lives on Ambrosia Street with his wife (Marie LaFreniere) and their three youngest sons.
He was born March 26, 1835, in Louisville, Quebec, Canada. His father, Sifroy Lessard, was a farmer. His mother's name was Seraphine Tessier. Narcisse spent a few years on his father's farm following his First Holy Communion. At 18 he got the urge to travel. He followed the example of many young people and left for the United States. He came to Muskegon in the summer of 1855. His first job was to work in the saw mills. After 12 years he was forced to quit the saw mill because of ill health. He became a carman or wagoner, which is his work at present. He owns a good home and lives comfortably. He is 64 years old.
In September 2009, I obtained a typescript copy of the Historical Notes from St. Jeans. The cover page indicated that the Notes originally had been written in French. St. Jean's copy was a transcription by June Bourdon Martin. The text is somewhat different from what I had copied, and reads:
Narcisse Lessard
Narcisse Lessard has been in Muskegon since 1855. He is one of the oldest citizens of the city. He resides on Ambrosia St with his wife Marie LaFreniere and his last 3 sons.
He was from Louisville, province of Quebec, Canada. His father Selfroy Lessard was a farmer. His mother carried the name of Seraphine, nee Tessier. Narcisse spent a few years on his father's farm after his first communion. At 18 he wanted to travel. He followed the example of many young people and left for the United States. He followed the example of a crowd of young people and left for the United States. In the summer of 1855 he came to Muskegon. His first occupation was in the lumber camps. He has a nice home and enjoys a comfortable life. He is 64 years of age.
I need to see the original French edition, if it can be found. Comment: The article contains a point that does not jibe with census or other records.
Narcisse came to Muskegon, or at least to Michigan, in 1867 or so, not in 1855. The 1880 census shows that their children born through 1867 were born in Quebec and the child born in 1871 was born in Michigan. Narcisse's 1900 census record indicates an immigration date of 1865; son Alexander's 1910 census record says the family immigrated in 1867. An old photo of a sawmill is captioned "Bangor, Michigan" (which is in Van Buren County) and continues to say that the family ran a mill for loggers. Bangor is on the Black River.
His obituary in 1910 repeats many of the same errors: Muskegon Chronicle, Muskegon Michigan, 19 January 1910, page 7:
OLD TIME LOG DRIVER OF LUMBER DAYS DIES Joseph Lasser, for 55 Years a Muskegon Resident, Passes Away
Joseph Nelson Lasser, 44 Ambrosia street, for 55 years a resident of Muskegon and known in the lumbering days as one of the leaders on the big "drives" down the Muskegon river, died at 10:45 o'clock last night, aged 76 years. He had been ill for the last three years, although his condition did not become serious until four months ago.
Born in Louisville, Québec, Canada, Mr. Lasser went to the eastern states, locating at Lowell, Mass., and engaging in the steamboat trade when but 18 years old. In 1855 he came to Muskegon and for years was well known as a log driver on the Muskegon river. For a number of years he also worked in Peck's shingle mill.
In 1858 he was married in Canada to Miss Marie Kathrine Lafraniere, the couple coming directly to Muskegon, where Mr. Lasser had before located. Mrs. Lasser died December 14, 1906.
He leaves six sons and two daughters, Zag of Lansing, Alex and Charles of Chicago, Edward, 85 E. Ionia street, Muskegon; Moses, Lansing; and Delore, 44 Ambrosia street, city, and Mrs. Mabel Bassett, Grand Rapids and Mrs. Frank Mousseau, 35 Elizabeth street, Muskegon; a brother John Lasser of Oconto, Wis.; and a sister Mrs. Louise Boussiere, Bay City; and 17 grandchildren.
On 20 January, the Chronicle published a small note under the heading "Local Brevities" (page 2, cols. 3 and 4) which substantiates the belief that Nelson was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, although no cemetery record exists to prove it.
The funeral of Joseph Nelson Lasser will be held at 9:30 tomorrow morning from the St. Jean's Baptiste church, Rev. Fr. John Sanson conducting the services. Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery.
An historical note. Narcisse built the first house on Ambrosia Street. It was originally numbered 44 Ambrosia. In 1925 Muskegon renumbered (and in some cases also renamed) all its streets (1925 Muskegon Street Renumbering Directory, page 8, Compiled by Margaret L. Ochs). Number 44 became 1116 Ambrosia. The house still stands (2009), though in poor condition in a neighborhood now in decline.
