Notes
a. Note:   H00003
Note:   Benjamin lived on his father's farm until he moved to Auburn in 1854, working there as a canalboat builder. In 1862 he bought a farm in the northeast section of West Brunswick Twp. from the heirs of his mother-in-law Catharine's <Feickes> second husband John Steigerwald. In 1865 he moved to another farm bought next to the first farm in East Brunswick Twp. Both farms were sold to his son Joseph Mengel and were described as: (1) 24 acres, 1 story log dwelling house, a frame barn, a pig sty and frame shop, a good orchard and fruit trees; (2) 102 acres, 2 story log dwelling house, weatherboarded frame barn, wagon shed, pig sty, blacksmith shop, a good orchard and fine fruit trees.
Benjamin was one of two Mengels that petitioned to have Auburn incorporated as a borough in 1857.
