Note: U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Served from April 10, 1943 to Nov 20, 1945. Reading Eagle, Reading, PA Nov 3, 2010: Roland B. Mengel, 86, Reading, died Nov. 1, 2010, at 11:10 a.m. in Reading Hospital. He was the husband of Naomi R. (Wolfe) Mengel. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Herman and Sadie (Drumheller) Mengel. He was a driver for dry cleaning and coffee companies for more than 30 years. He was a salesman at Boscov's North and Longenecker's Clothing Store and was a shuttle person for Rothrock and Lindgrens. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Reading and past member of the former Central Park Methodist Church. He served in the Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Bronze Star and was PFC. He was recognized for heroism in action against the Japanese near Mt. Mataba, Luzon. A little bearer with 6th Infantry Division, he saved the lives of several of his comrades when he advanced far beyond his battalion aid station to administer first aide to the wounded. He was a life member of American Legion Post 12 in Reading and member of Travelers Protection Association and Republican City Committeeman. He was preceded in death by a son, John B. Mengel, in 1949. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
