Note: Notes for Charles Peter William Schmidt: The 1900 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The home where Charles Schmidt was living was enumerated June eighth. The census page shows that 13 year old "Charly" was no longer living with his parents. He was living with another family in Mequon, Wisconsin, and was working as a farm laborer. The 1905 Wisconsin state census had an effective date of June first, which was the exact date Charles was enumerated. The census page shows that 18 year old "Charles, Jr.", a laborer, was back at the home of his parents, with five of his siblings. His occupation was a laborer. The Charles Schmidt home was enumerated January third. Charles was still a fireman at a "power house". The 1930 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The Charles Schmidt home was enumerated April eighth or ninth. The census page shows "Chas", 43; Clara, 42; and children "Karl", 16; Olive, 15; Melvin, 13; Lester, 12; Oscar, 11; Nicholas, 9; Ralph, 8; Myron, 4; and Clarice, age two. The family lived on a farm they owned in Belgium. On the same census page, the Jac Watry family was listed. Jac Watry's future grandson Robert Watry would later marry Charles Schmidt's future granddaughter Jane Schmidt. The 1940 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The Charles Schmidt home was enumerated April twenty sixth. The census page shows Charles, 53; Clara, 52; and children Ralph, Myron, Clarice, and Carl, plus Carl's wife Betty. They still lived on a farm in Belgium, and Charles was still a farmer. Charles, Clara, and Ralph only had 8th grade educations. On April 27, 1942, at the age of 55, Charles had to sign a World War 2 draft registration card. At that time, he was a farmer living in Cedar Grove with Clara. Charles and these other 45 to 64 year old men were not going to get called for military service. The purpose of the registration was to document the mens' skills for possible use later in the war. Photo From the February 25, 1949 Sheboygan Press, an obituary for Charles: Photo Charles' FindAGrave memorial includes photos of his grave marker: Memorial
