Notes
a. Note:   Notes for John Nicholaus Goschey: When he lived in Luxembourg, his first name was Johann, although he may have dropped that and gone by Nicholas. At that time his last name may have been spelled Goschi.
The 1850 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Goschey home was enumerated September twenty third. The census page shows "John N. Goghe", a farmer, 36; his wife "Margt", 30; and six children. All but the youngest child, a one year old, were born in "Germany" (actually Luxembourg). The next youngest child was born in Luxembourg about 1845, so the family immigrated between 1845 and 1849, At the time of this census, the family lived in Belgium, Wisconsin, which at that time was in Washington County. Ozaukee County was created in 1853.
The 1860 U S. census had an effective date of June first. The Goschey home was enumerated July tenth. The census page shows "Nicholaus Gouche", 50, a farmer; his wife "Margaretha", 39; and six children, three of whom are all listed as having the name of Peter. The family still lived in Belgium. The oldest child, age 15, is listed as being born in Luxembourg, and the next oldest, age 10, and all younger children are listed as being born in Wisconsin, so the parents and oldest child immigrated between 1845 and 1850.
The 1870 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Goschey home was enumerated June eighth. The census page shows "Nicholas Goshe", 57, a farmer; his wife "Margret", 53; and three children, including five year old Albert, living in Belgium. Notice that if Margaret's age was correct, then she delivered Albert at the shocking age of 48, unless Albert was adopted.
The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Goschey home was enumerated about June twentieth. The census page shows "John N." Goschey, 68, a farmer; Margaret, 52; and three children, including 16 year old Albert, living in Belgium. It was indicated that John could not read or write. Somehow, ten years of time passed, but Margaret actually lost a year of age! None of the four census ages match up to a consistent year of birth for her. People made mistakes.
The 1885 Wisconsin state census, taken June twentieth, shows John N. Goschey heading a household of three males and two females in Belgium.
