Notes
a. Note:   Notes for Charles Schmidt (born 1853): He was also known as Carl.
Charles/Carl has so far not been located for certain in the 1870 or 1880 U.S. censuses. There was a 17-year-old Charles Schmidt in Cedarburg in 1870, but he was not the correct person.
The 1885 Wisconsin state census had an effective date of June first. The Schmidt home was enumerated on June twenty seventh or twenty eighth. The census page shows only the name of the head of the household; "Chs." Schmidt. Other family members were not named, they were just totaled by sex and country of birth. There were two males and two females in the house. Of those four, two were born in "Germany"; they must be Charles and his wife Mary/Maria. The other two people were listed as being born in the United States. They are probably the couple's oldest son and daughter. The family was living in Mequon, Ozaukee, Wisconsin. At that time, 3,058 people lived in Mequon.
The 1890 U.S. census records were accidentally burned or damaged by water in 1921. Most of the remaining records were destroyed about 1934.
The 1895 Wisconsin state census had an effective date of June first. The Schmidt home was enumerated June twentieth. The census page shows only the name of the head of the household, "Carl" Schmidt. Other family members were not named, they were just totaled by sex and country of birth. There were four males and seven females in the house. Of those eleven, three were born in "Germany"; they must be Carl, his mother, and his wife. Eight were born in the United States, who may be children. The family was still living in Mequon.
The 1900 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Schmidt home was enumerated June fourth. The census page shows Charles, born in April 1853; his wife Mary, born in March 1861; five children, and Charles' 84 year old mother, Johanna (aka Anna) (misspelled "Johana") living in Mequon. Charles and Mary's 13 year old son Charles was living with a nearby family in Mequon and working as a farm laborer. Charles and Mary had been married for 15 years. It was stated that Charles and Mary were born in Germany. Also shown was that Charles and his mother immigrated in 1863, and Mary immigrated in 1884. But 1884 may be incorrect, because the 1900 census shows that Mary's son Julius was born in June 1884. Charles owned a farm, and he could read, write, and speak English. Mary could not do any of those.

The 1905 Wisconsin state census, taken June first, shows "Carl" 52, a farmer; "Maria", 44; and six children, including 18 year old "Charles, Jr.", a laborer, living in Mequon. Charles Sr.'s mother Johanna, who had been 84 years old in 1900, was not listed as living with the family, so she probably had died.
The 1910 U.S. census had an effective date of April fifteenth. The Schmidt home was enumerated April thirtieth. The census page shows "Carl", 57; "Marie", 49; and five of their children living on a farm in Mequon. Charles' year of immigration was stated to be 1862, although the 1900 census had stated 1863. Mary/Marie/Maria's year of immigration was stated to be 1887, although the 1900 census has stated 1884. The couple had been married for 25 years, which, if accurate, puts their marriage in 1884 or 1885. So Mary must have immigrated by 1885 at the latest.
Charles' grave marker shows his name as Carl. The marker, while weathered, contains abbreviations in the German language. "Geb." is an abbreviation for geboren, which means born. "Gest." is an abbreviation for gestorben, which means died.
