Notes
a. Note:   Notes for Charles Schmidt (born 1798/1799): When he lived in Prussia, his first name may have been Carl.
Charles, his wife Johanna, along with at least one child of theirs, 10 year old Charles, immigrated from Prussia in 1863.
The 1870 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Schmidt home was enumerated June sixteenth. The census page shows Charles, 71, and his wife, written as "Anna", 55, living in Mequon, Ozaukee, Wisconsin. Charles' occupation was listed as "None". Both are listed as being born in Prussia.
The 1875 Wisconsin state census does not have a listing in Mequon for Charles Schmidt, even though he lived in Mequon in 1870 and 1880.
The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Schmidt home was enumerated June sixteenth. The census page shows Charles, 81, a retired farmer, and Anna, 65, living in Mequon. It was stated that both of them and all four of their parents were born in Prussia.
The 1885 Wisconsin state census does not show Charles listed in Mequon, where he had lived for years. He had probably died by 1885, since he was in his 80s. Someone named "Chas. Schmidt" died in Ozaukee County on December 22, 1883, but it is unknown if he is the correct person. Charles' wife Johanna, "Anna", was still alive in 1885, since she is shown in the 1900 U.S. census, but she is not listed in the 1885 Wisconsin state census, either. She must have been living with other people when that census was recorded.
