The day after she was born, Margaret was baptized in a Catholic church (almost certainly the Church of the Most Holy Rosary, in Luggacurren) in the Parish of Ballyadams, in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, in County Queens. A photo of Margaret's listing in the parish baptismal registry book, on the bottom line, including a misspelling of Tyndall: Photo
Margaret was the oldest child in her family.
According to the 1900, 1910, and 1930 U.S. censuses, Margaret emigrated from Ireland in 1881.
A passenger list from the May 12, 1881, arrival in New York of the ship Palmyra from Liverpool, England, and Queenstown, Ireland, likely shows the listing for the correct 16-year-old Margaret Knowles, and her escort, her 37 year old father, Thomas Knowles. The 1881 year of immigration matches Margaret's stated year of immigration on the 1900, 1910, and 1930 censuses.
A photo of parts of two pages from that manifest. Photo The "do" under the name Knowles was an abbreviation of ditto.
The 16-year age in May of 1881 puts this Margaret as born in 1864 or 1865, which matches Margaret's known date of birth of February 25, 1865. The name of the father of the Margaret Knowles in this genealogy chart was previously known to be Thomas. The Thomas Knowles immigrating with this Margaret Knowles was 21 years older than her, making him her likely father. Thomas' occupation was listed on the manifest as a laborer, and Margaret was listed as a servant. There was no information on that manifest stating a destination for the two Knowles'. So it isn't known if they went straight to Chicago.
If these are the correct Knowles' for this genealogy chart, the most likely scenario explaining the traveling situation would probably have been that Thomas was just escorting young 16-year-old Margaret to this new land, the United States, to have a chance at a better life. After completing that mission, apparently this Thomas Knowles soon went back to Ireland. If he was the correct Thomas Knowles, then he returned to Ireland to rejoin his wife and 10 younger children. It might have helped if the 1890 census records had not been destroyed in a fire in 1921.
There was no listing for Margaret Knowles in any Chicago directory during the 1880s when she was single. If she was living in a home with other people, then only the head of the household would have been listed in city directories.
The 1910 U.S. census shows that Margaret had given birth to seven children, five of whom were still living.
A photo of Margaret's death notice in the July 2, 1933 Chicago Tribune: Photo
Margaret's death certificate, which includes the signature of her husband, George: Photo
The 1966 Chicago Tribune death notice for a sister of Margaret Knowles Parker, Sister Mary Elvira Knowles, stated that she was the daughter of "Thomas and Catherine Tyndal Knowles". But Tyndall was the correct spelling of Catherine's maiden name. That death notice mentions one brother, Martin, who was then living in Santa Rosa, California. He is listed in the Social Security Death Index. He lived to the age of 97, dying in 1975. More about Margaret's siblings is in the "notes" for her father, Thomas, in this chart.
Margaret's FindAGrave memorial includes photos of her, and photos of her grave marker: Memorial Margaret's burial location: Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Worth Township, Cook, Illinois. NW corner of Section 11; Block 1, Lot E-64, Grave 3. Across from Section 8.
