Note: Notes for Andrew McGrory, known as "Andy": In old Irish documents, including birth records of some of Andrew's children, McGrory was often misspelled as McGroary. That last name was sometimes written as M'Grory. Andrew and his wife Margaret were illiterate. They signed documents by drawing an x or a +. In Ireland, beginning in the early and middle 1800s, baptismal registry books were used by Catholic parishes in Ireland to provide a written record of baptisms. Marriage registry books were also kept. Those registry books have since been photographed. However, the ink handwriting has faded somewhat over time, and the handwriting isn't great. The baptismal records list the first name of the baptized newborn, the date of the baptism, the parent's names, including the mother's maiden name, and the names of the two sponsors. The name of the townland in which the family lived was not included. Some infants were baptized as early as the day they were born. Those baptismal records contain the names of 11 of the following 14 known children of Andrew McGrory and Margaret Conwell McGrory; most, or all of whom were born in Lough Head, Corporation, Killybegs Upper, County Donegal: 1) Elizabeth McGrory, baptized March 31, 1859, in the Catholic Parish of Killaghtee, in the Diocese of Raphoe, in County Donegal. (No written civil birth records were made in the area until 1864.) She was known as "Bessie".Elizabeth/Bessie immigrated to the United States in 1878, married Michael Carr (also of Ireland) in 1881 or 1882 and gave birth to 11 children. The family lived near White Haven, in Foster Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. All 11 children were born in Pennsylvania. Michael was a farmer. 2) James McGrory, born in early 1860 and baptized May 4th or June 4th in the Catholic Parish of Killybegs, in the Diocese of Raphoe, in County Donegal. The geographic area of the Catholic Parish of Killybegs was quite similar to the area of the Civil Parish of Killybegs Upper. (The two parishes where the children of Andrew and Margaret McGrory were baptized, are adjacent.) 3) Mary McGrory, baptized October 21, 1861, in the Parish of Killybegs. 4) Hugh McGrory, baptized June 3, 1863, in the Parish of Killybegs. 5) Joseph McGrory, born December 23, 1864. He was baptized December 25th in the Parish of Killybegs. In the 1911 Census of Ireland, he was listed as an unmarried farmer, living in the Townland of Corporation. 6) Andrew McGrory, born September 10, 1866. His birth record shows his name as John. But that was a mistake. His September 11th baptismal record in the Parish of Killaghtee shows his name written as Andrew. Andrew, sometimes known as Andy, immigrated to the United States about 1888. The 1900 U.S. census shows Andrew living in the home of his sister Margaret and her husband Cornelius Byrne, in Chicago. Andrew was still there at the time of the 1920 census. He was not listed as married in either census. Andrew McGrory died February 8, 1928, in Braidwood, Will, Illinois. He is buried at the same gravesite as his sisters Margaret Byrne, Catherine "Cassie" McGrory, and Elizabeth "Bettie" McGrory Harmon. Andrew's FindAGrave memorial includes a photo of him, and a photo of his grave marker: Memorial 7) William McGrory, born early May of 1868. On his birth record, William's father's name was written as Andy "McGroary", a farmer. William was baptized May 14th in the Parish of Killybegs. He immigrated to Chicago. An 1894 Chicago directory listed William, his brother Andrew and their sister Margaret McGrory (with their last names misspelled) living at the same boarding house on Indiana Avenue. William was a bricklayer. A photo of that listing, which also shows an unrelated woman named Maggie: Photo At some point after that William somehow ended up living in Jefferson County, Texas. He had moved there by early 1904, at the latest. I have no idea why he left Chicago and moved more than 1,000 miles away from four of his siblings who continued to live in Chicago. William was a brick mason, like he had also been listed as in the above stated 1894 Chicago directory. On May 9, 1904, William married Mary Tennie Mullins, who usually went by Tennie. The man's name was shown in city directories as William C. McGrory. He must have tacked on a middle name or initial on his own, because nobody born in Ireland in those years was given a middle name. The couple were listed in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 U.S. censuses in Port Arthur, Jefferson, Texas. They had at least five children. Two were named after William's parents, Andrew and Margaret. Two sons died young, one at age three months, and one at age 16 or 17 due to a tornado. The stated names of William's parents, combined with his date of birth prove that a September 27, 1930 death certificate for a "W. C. McGrory" was for the correct William McGrory who was the son of Andrew and his wife Margaret, even though the mother's first name was written as Mary. A photo of that death certificate: <a href=https://photos.app.goo.gl/3ko1bPbGSE9fQxYg8">Photo 8) Edward McGrory, born May 6, 1870. He was baptized May 17, 1870, in the Parish of Killybegs. 9) Cornelius McGrory, known as Con and as Condy, born April 9, 1872. He was baptized the same day, in the Parish of Killaghtee. 10) Margaret McGrory, born in late March or April 1 of 1874, and baptized April 2nd, in the Parish of Killybegs. More about her is in this chart. 11) John McGrory, born February 23, 1876. No baptismal entry has been found for John. 12) Catherine McGrory, baptized March 4, 1877, in the Parish of Killybegs. Her nickname was Cassie. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1890, according to information in the 1920 U.S. census, which shows the unmarried Catherine living in the home of her sister Margaret and her husband Cornelius Byrne, in Chicago. Cassie was then a nurse. She died December 26, 1932, in Will County, Illinois. Catherine McGrory is buried at the same gravesite as her sisters Margaret Byrne and Elizabeth "Bettie" McGrory, and their brother Andrew "Andy" McGrory. Catherine's FindAGrave memorial includes a photo of her grave marker: Memorial 13) Bridget McGrory, known as Bessie, born in May 1, 1879. No baptismal entry has been found for Bridget/Bessie. 14) Elizabeth McGrory, known as Bettie, born in 1880 or 1881. No baptismal entry has been found for Elizabeth/Bettie. She immigrated to the U.S. about 1902. Bettie married Thomas D. Harmon on June 12, 1907, in Chicago. They had only one child, born January 17 or 27, 1909; Mary Josephine "Josephine" and "Jo" and "Mary Jo" Harmon, who married Edward Joseph Scahill on August 28, 1935. Bettie worked outside of the home. She was listed as a servant and a nurse in the 1910 census, and a nurse in the 1920 census. Bettie and Thomas Harmon got divorced, possibly within a couple of years after getting married. Bettie was living at a Little Sisters of the Poor facility before she died. Bettie Harmon died March 28, 1951, in Chicago. She had identical death notices in the March 29th and 30th Chicago Tribunes: Photo Bettie is buried at the same gravesite as her sisters Margaret Byrne and Catherine McGrory (known as Cassie) and their brother Andrew McGrory (known as Andy). Bettie's FindAGrave memorial includes photos of her, and a photo of her grave marker: Memorial - The death record of Andrew McGrory (the father of the above 14) and the birth records of many of his children all state that Andrew's occupation was a farmer.
