Note: Notes for Jean Guillaume Weiland: Luxembourg used and uses three official languages; French, German, and Luxembourgish. At the time of this boy's birth, in his area, his birth record was written in French; Jean Guillaume Weiland: Photo Later he went by the German version of Jean, which was Johann. Later still, he went by the English version, which was John. About that time period he used the English version of his French middle name of Guillaume, which was William. He immigrated into the United States about March of 1857. The 1860 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Weiland home was enumerated June twenty ninth. The census page shows "Johann Wm Weiland", 26, a farmer; his wife "Catharina", 20; their six month old son John; and a Peter Weiland, age 20, who must have been the adult John's brother. The adults were born in Luxembourg, and the child was born in Wisconsin, so the adults immigrated before 1860. The family was living in Belgium, Ozaukee, Wisconsin. The 1870 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Weiland home was enumerated June seventh. The census page shows "J. W. Wiland", 38, a farmer; Catherine, 30; and two children, living in Belgium. Their son John, who had been a baby in 1860, was not listed, so he probably had died before this census. The parents were listed as being born in Luxembourg. The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Weiland home was enumerated June second. The census page shows John, 46, a farmer; Catherine, 38; and seven children, including eight year old Mary, living in Belgium. On September 10, 1889, John W. Weiland signed a Declaration of Intention document (intention to become a U.S. citizen): Photo The 1890 U.S. census records were accidentally burned or damaged by water in 1921. Most of the remaining records were destroyed about 1934. The first link below leads to a map showing farm locations with owner's names in the area of Belgium, Wisconsin in 1892. I have outlined the farms of six ancestors of Robert Jac Watry, born in 1949. One of those six men, John Watry, owned two farms. The second link shows that same map overlaid on a 2017 satellite map of the same area. 1892 farm map 1892 map on 2017 map John's FindAGrave memorial includes photos of his grave marker, which shows his name as Johann: Memorial
