Note: Notes for Johann/Jean/John Krier, Sr.: He was known as Johann and as Jean in Luxembourg. He was known as Jean and as John in the United States. The country of Luxembourg used and uses three official languages; French, German, and Luxembourgish. At the time of this boy's birth, in his area, his birth record was written in German; Photo so his name was written as Johann. In Luxembourg, he also went by the French version of his name, Jean. Even in the 1860 census in Wisconsin, his name was written as Jean. But he usually went by John in the U.S. Jean Krier had a first marriage to a Marguerite Kemp in 1849 in Bertrange, Luxembourg. There was a census that was taken in Luxembourg on December 31, 1851. The Krier family was listed, and an image of the census page exists to this day: Photo The census page shows Jean Krier, 29; his wife Marguerite Kemp, 24; and their one year old daughter Anne. They were living in Bertrange, and they were all born in Bertrange. Jean was a "cultivateur", a farmer. The family were Catholics. The family was also in a census taken in December of 1852: Photo Marguerite apparently died within a few years. A poster on the website http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com relays a story that John's first wife Marguerite died as they arrived in the United States. Also posted was that one child died, and one child, Anna, born in 1850, survived. Anna was listed in the 1870 census with the family, and she was listed there as being born in Luxembourg. Then John married Maria/Marie/Mary Katharina/Catherine Mans on August 13, 1855, at St. Mary's Church in Lake Church, Ozaukee, Wisconsin. The 1860 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Krier home was enumerated June twenty ninth. The census page shows "Jean Kruer", 34, a farmer; his wife "Maria Catharina", 29; and six children living in Belgium, Ozaukee, Wisconsin. The parents and eight year old Anna are listed as being born in Luxembourg, with the younger children being born in Wisconsin. The 1870 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Krier home was enumerated June sixth. The census page shows John, a farmer; his wife, listed as "Catharine"; and nine children living in Belgium. The census taker apparently misunderstood the family's last name, since it was written as "Kear". The census taker mistakenly added about 20 years to the ages of the parents. He wrote 65 and 60, when the truth was closer to 45 and 40. John, Mary Catharine, and older daughter Anna were listed as being born in Luxembourg. The family had a second, younger daughter also named Anna. The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Krier home was enumerated June third. The census page shows John, 58; his wife, "Mary Cath.", 49; three adult children, and four minor children, including 9 year old Catherine. The family still lived in Belgium. John's occupation was a farmer. John, Mary, and all four of their parents were listed as being born in Luxembourg. The handwritten name of Krier on the census page looks somewhat like Kevier. The 1890 U.S. census records were accidentally burned or damaged by water in 1921. Most of the remaining records were destroyed about 1934. The first link below leads to a map showing farm locations with owner's names in the area of Belgium, Wisconsin in 1892. I have outlined the farms of six ancestors of Robert Jac Watry, born in 1949. One of those six men, John Watry, owned two farms. The second link shows that same map overlaid on a 2017 satellite map of the same area. 1892 farm map 1892 map on 2017 map The 1900 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Krier home was enumerated June sixteenth. The census page shows that John Krier was a 79 year old widower living with his son Nicholas and his family in Belgium. He and his parents were listed as having been born in Luxembourg. It was stated that John immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1853. His occupation was a landlord. John's FindAGrave memorial includes photos of his grave marker: Memorial
