Note: Notes for Hubert Buero: The last name spelled Buero is practically non-existent in Germany. Prussia (now roughly Germany and Poland) was where Hubert was born and lived for a couple of decades. Buero was either the deliberately Americanized spelling of his original name that he adpoted, or it was just how most Americans wrote down his last name after they heard it. Hubert's birth name was almost certainly originally spelled, in order of likelihood, either Burow, Büro, Buro, Buhrow, or Buhro. Hubert and Katharina Borsch were married in Ozaukee County on December 20, 1876. A transcription of that marriage record has been posted on the internet. It contains the names of the parents of the couple. The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first, which was the exact date the Buero household was enumerated. The census page shows the misspelled name Hubert "Bero", 35, (actually 44) a farmer; his wife, listed using an English spelling of her name, "Catharine", 30; their 15 month old son Joseph; and Catharine's 73 year old father John Borsch. All of the adults were born in Prussia. They lived in Grafton, Ozaukee, Wisconsin. About 1881, Hubert and Catherine had a daughter, Susanna "Susan" Buero. On July 31, 1884, Hubert's wife Katharina gave birth to their daughter Mary Gertrude "Gertrude" Buero. The Buero family can't be located in the 1885 Wisconsin state census. Katharina/Catherine Borsch Buero died April 9, 1899 at the age of 44. At some point in 1890 Hubert Buero married Lucile "Lucy" Tartar. The 1890 U.S. census records were accidentally burned or damaged by water in 1921. Most of the remaining records were destroyed about 1934. On April 26, 1894, in Grafton, Hubert and Lucy Buero had a son, Michael Adam Buero. The 1900 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Buero household was enumerated June twelfth. The census page shows the misspelled name Hubert "Puro", 64, a farmer; his second wife Lucy, 52; plus children Gertrude, 16; and Michael, age six. They lived in Grafton Township. Hubert and Lucy had been married for 10 years. The adults were born in Germany. Hubert's stated year of immigration, 1887, was way off. He had gotten married to his first wife Katharina Borsch in Wisconsin in 1876. Susanna/Susan was no longer living with her parents and siblings. The 1905 Wisconsin state census was taken in June. Listed were "Herbert" "Berow", 70, a farmer; Lucy, 58; and sons Joseph and Michael. They lived in the "Town of Grafton", which was listed separately from the "Village of Grafton". The 1910 U.S. census had an effective date of April fifteenth. The Buero household was enumerated April twentieth. The census page shows "Hubbard", 74, a farmer; his wife, "Lucia", 72, (probably actually about 62); and their son Mike, 25. They lived in Grafton. The couple's stated years of immigration were both 1855. But they almost certainly were not in the United States before 1870.
