a. Note:   Notes for Harry Westel Ponting: About April of 1910, Harry W. Ponting left his wife and two young sons in England, and boarded a ship in Liverpool. That ship apparently traveled to Montreal. Then, either on the same ship, or another one, Harry traveled to Detroit, Michigan, where he entered the United States.
  On September 8, 1910, Harry's wife Alice and their two young sons, John Henry Ponting and Frederick Charles Ponting boarded the ship <i>Corsican</i> in Liverpool. On September 16th, they arrived in Montreal, Canada. The three people entered the United States the same day.
  By about mid 1912 at the latest, the Ponting family had moved to Junction City, Geary, Kansas. They had a listing in the city directory: Ponting Harry W wf Alice painter r 281 e 7th

  The 1920 U.S. census had an effective date of January first. The Ponting family was enumerated January eighth. The census page shows Harry W., 38; his wife Alice, 38; children Jack, 11; James, 5; and Bertha, 2 years and 8 months of age. Also living in the home were Harry's widowed mother Kate, 68, plus two sisters, a brother-in-law, and a roomer. Those last five had just immigrated from England the previous year. Harry had immigrated from England in 1910. The household of 10 lived in Junction City. Harry was still a manager at a garage. He had become a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1916.   The 1930 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The Ponting family was enumerated April eighth. The census page shows Harry W., 48; Alice E., 48; and children John H., 22; Fred H. (actually C.), 20; (although he was absent) James H., 15; Bertha A. (Alice), 13; and Doris, age nine. They lived at 630 E. 9th Street, in Pomona, Los Angeles, California. Harry was a painter and paper hanger. The parents and two oldest children had immigrated in 1910 from England, and had since become naturalized U.S. citizens. The youngest three were born in Kansas.   The 1940 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The Ponting family was enumerated April fifteenth. The census page shows Harry, 59; Alice, 59; and Doris, 19. All three had 8th grade educations. They lived at 1010 W. 4th Street, in Pomona. They paid $20 a month in rent. It was mistakenly written that Doris was born in California. Kansas was correct.   On April 25, 1942, at the age of 60, Harry signed a World War 2 draft registration card. Harry and these other 45 to 64 year old men were not going to get called for military service. The purpose of the registration was to document the mens' skills for possible use in the United States, later in the war.   In May of 1942, Harry filled out a Social Security number application. He wrote his date of birth as February 14, 1881, with his place of birth as Cirencester, in the United Kingdom. Harry wrote his parents' names as "Kate S. Terret" and John Ponting. Harry was given number 573-24-5447.
