Notes
a. Note:   Notes for Thomas Dennison: Thomas and Mary Dennison were listed in the 1841 United Kingdom Census in Scotland. They were also listed in the 1851 and 1861 U. K. censuses, but they had moved to England. Mary and some children were listed in the 1871 census, still in England, but Thomas was not listed. He had apparently traveled to the United States, where Mary and her children and one or two relatives met up with him in 1872. In 1851 and 1861, Thomas' occupation was listed as a coal miner.
On November 1, 1876, Thomas became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Dennison home was enumerated June twelfth. The census page shows that "Thos." Dennison, 67, a laborer; his wife Mary, 63; and a son John, 25, a (coal) miner, were living in Braidwood, Will County, Illinois.
The Dennison's almost certainly had come to Braidwood because for many years Thomas had been a coal miner in England, and coal had been discovered in Braidwood in 1864. There was a large market for selling coal in Chicago.
