Note: Notes for Joseph H. Donnelly: The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Donnelly family was enumerated June ninth. The census page shows the misspelled name of Joseph "Donely", 25; his wife Mary, 24; their son "Timm", 9 months of age; Mary's 18 year old sister Kate Dennison; and a 16-year-old niece. Nine boarders lived with the family at an unstated location in Joliet, Will County, Illinois. Joseph was a blacksmith. He had been born in Illinois, and his parents had been born in Ireland. Mary had been born in England, and her parents had been born in Scotland. The Donnelly family was enumerated June ninth. The census page shows the Joseph Donnelly family, but the census taker had poor handwriting, and he came up with some very strange spellings. Listed were "Josep Dovnno", 44; Mary, 47 (actually 44); and children Simon, 20; "Tahms", 19; Mary, 14; "Cally", 11; "Issabela", 9; "Norra", 7; and Anna, 4. The family lived at 201 Harker Ave., in Joliet. Joseph and Mary had been married for 22 years. Mary had given birth to nine children, seven of whom were still living. Joseph's occupation is indecipherable. Joseph had been born in Illinois, and his parents were born in Ireland. Mary had been born in England. Her parents were listed as being born in Scotland, the census taker apparently meant. The Donnelly family was enumerated April twentieth. The census page shows the misspelled name of Joseph "Donley", 55; Mary, 54; and children Simon, 30; Mary, 22; "Katie", 21; "Isabell", 18; Nora, 17; and "Annie", 13. The family lived at 1501 Jackson St., in Joliet. Everybody could read and write. Joseph and Mary had been married for 32 years. Mary had given birth to nine children, seven of whom were still living. Joseph was unemployed. Isabel was a bookkeeper at a paper mill. All six children had been born in Illinois. Joseph had been born in Illinois, and his parents were born in Ireland. Joseph's wife Mary had been born in England, as had her father. Mary's mother had been born in Scotland. Mary was listed as having immigrated to the United States in 1870, but the correct year was 1872.
