Note: Notes for Simon Donnelly: At the time of Simon's February 1849 marriage to Isabella McCarren in Massachusetts, his occupation was a laborer. The 1850 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Donnelly family did not get enumerated until September tenth. The census page shows the misspelled name of Simon "Donley", 30; his wife "Isabel", 30; and son Thomas, 6 months of age (as of June first). Thomas had been born November 11, 1849, which was nine months and four days after his parents had married. The family lived in Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Simon was a stone mason. He and Isabel had been born in Ireland. Thomas was born in Massachusetts. On September 1, 1856, Simon became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Later that month, Simon and Isabella had a son named Simon. The infant died at the age of seven months on April 28, 1857. The 1860 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Donnelly family was enumerated July sixteenth. The census page shows Simon "Donnally", 40; Isabella, 38; and children Thomas 9; Joseph, 6; and Edward, 2 months of age. They lived in Joliet, Will County, Illinois. Simon was a stone mason. He and his wife had been born in Ireland. Thomas was born in Massachusetts. Joseph and Edward were born in Illinois. The Donnelly family was enumerated July twentieth. The census page shows Simon Donnelly, 51; "Isabell", 45; children Joseph, 15; Edward, 8; John, 7; Isabella, 11; and a Patrick Donnelly, 39, who was probably Simon's brother. They still lived in Joliet. The family right after them on the page must be headed by Joseph's older brother. Simon was a stone mason. He and his wife had been born in Ireland. Joseph and Edward were born in Illinois. Young Isabella was born in Massachusetts. The Donnelly family was enumerated August sixth. The census page shows Simon Donnelly, 60; Isabella, 52; and three sons still living in Joliet. Joseph was no longer living with his parents. Simon was a farmer. Simon and Isabel and their parents had been born in Ireland. Surprisingly, for the third consecutive decennial census, Isabel had aged much less than 10 years.
