a. Note:   Notes for Thomas James Miller: The 1930 U. S. census had an effective date of April first. The Miller home was enumerated April fourth. The census page shows "T. James", 30 (actually 27); his wife Nellie, 35; their children James, 5; Richard, 4; Frances, 3; and Robert, one year of age, plus a servant. They lived at 10630 S. Throop St., Chicago. Their rent was $40 a month. The family owned a radio. Thomas was a shipping clerk and Nellie was a nurse. The couple had been married six years. It was correctly written that Thomas' father was born in Ireland, and Thomas' mother was born in Pennsylvania. It was also correctly written that Nellie's father was born in Kentucky, and her mother was born in Ireland.

  The 1940 U. S. census had an effective date of April first. The Miller home was enumerated April fourth. The census page shows Thomas, 36; Nellie, 45; their children James, 15; Richard, 13; Frances, 12; and Robert, 11; plus Nellie's 42 year old brother William Carmody. They still lived on Throop St. Thomas was a clerk for a steel company. He had earned $2,000 in 1939. He and his wife had 8th grade educations.

  After Nellie died in 1966, Thomas remarried to a Helen Mason.
