Notes
a. Note:   Notes for James Francis Carmody: The supposed names of James' parents, Con Carmody and Ellen Boh, were written on James' 1889 Iowa marriage record to Mary Dwyer. But Con was incorrect. James' father's name was Thomas. And Boh was incorrect. Ellen's obituary states that her maiden name was Boland.
James can't be located in the 1860, 1870, or 1880 U. S. censuses in Iowa, where his family lived. He is not listed in the 1885 Iowa state census.
The 1895 Iowa state census lists James Carmody, 41, living in Great Oak Township, in Palo Alto County, Iowa. He was listed as born in Kentucky. His wife and four children were also listed on the census page.

The children were all listed as being born in Great Oak Township. The children were almost certainly all born in the family home: Patrick Joseph Carmody, born March 22, 1891. Bridget Carmody, born November 10, 1898. Mark Carmody, born October 10, 1900. Richard Anthony Carmody, born October 17, 1901. Julia V. Carmody, born December 30, 1903. Margaret Mary Carmody, born May 19, 1906.
The 1900 U.S. census is the only census ever to ask for the year and the month that people were born. That census had an effective date of June first. The Carmody home was enumerated January eleventh. The census page shows James Carmody, born in May of 1853, in Kentucky, a farmer; his wife Mary, born in May of 1867, in Ireland (but her County Tipperary, Ireland birth record shows the correct date was May 3, 1864); daughter Ellen, born in November of 1889, in Iowa; and six younger children. One of Mary's eight children had died.
The family lived on a farm in Great Oak Township. Mary had emigrated to the U.S. in 1883 (but the 1930 census says 1886). James' and Mary's parents had all been born in Ireland.

The 1910 U.S. census had an effective date of April fifteenth. The Carmody home was enumerated April nineteenth. The census page shows James, 56; Mary, 45; and 10 of the couple's 11 surviving children, (among the 13 who had been born)including 20 year old Ellen. The family's home was on 12th St., in Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa. James' occupation was a laborer.

The 1915 Iowa state census lists James Carmody, 61, living in Emmetsburg. He was listed as born in Kentucky. He had lived in Iowa for 32 years. His religion was Catholic. He could read and write. He had a 5th grade education. His occupation was a day laborer. He had been unemployed for six months in 1914. He had earned $410 in 1914.
The 1920 U.S. census had an effective date of January first. The Carmody home was enumerated January thirtieth. The census page shows James "Carmondy", 68, (actually 66) a laborer; his wife Mary, 54; daughter Nellie, 29, a private nurse; and 10 younger children. They still lived in Emmetsburg. Mary was listed as having emigrated in 1886, but the 1900 census had said 1883.

At some point during the next 10 years, James, Mary and at least two of their adult children moved to the south side of Chicago.
The 1930 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The residence where James and Mary Carmody lived was enumerated April sixth. Listed were James F. "Carnody", 76, born in Kentucky; Mary D., 64, born in Ireland; their daughter Rose, 33; son John V., 37; two roomers; and the head of the household, a 47-year-old unmarried "Nellie" "Carnody" (Carmody) born in Kentucky, who was listed as James' sister. But that Nellie was probably James' and Mary's daughter Ellen, who would have been 41, not 47. They lived at 1513 E. 65th Place, in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.
