Note: Notes for G. Reichard Hartmann/Hartman: In the United States, he was known as G.R. and as Richard. His name has been written in many different ways on documents in the United States. The U.S. censuses had him listed as "Reichort Hartman" in 1860, "Richard Hartman" in 1870, and "J R Hartman" in 1880, but that "J R" was a mistake. The Wisconsin state censuses had him listed as "R. Hartman" in 1875 and 1885, and as "G R Hartman" in 1895. The death record for his wife gave his name as "G. R. Hartman". His last name was spelled Hartman in the United States, but "Hartmann" was the correct original German spelling. "Hartmann" is the spelling on the couple's grave marker. No indication of what the "G" stood for has so far been found. If that first full name was learned, that might help find information about him from before he immigrated. The 1860 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Hartmann family was enumerated July tenth. The census page shows "Reichort" "Hartman", 42; his wife Wilhelmina, 35; and three daughters, including five-year-old Emma. The family lived in Amherst, Portage, Wisconsin. Richard was a farmer. He and his wife had been born in the Kingdom of Saxony. That area now is roughly identical to the State of Saxony (Sachsen in German) in Germany. Since the oldest daughter Emma was born in Wisconsin in 1855 (on October 1st) Reichard and his wife immigrated to the United States before October of 1855. For the 1900 U.S. census, Wilhelmina stated that her year of immigration was 1854. The Hartmann family was enumerated July twenty seventh. The census page shows "Richard" "Hartman", 50; his wife, going by the nickname "Mina", 44; three children, including 14 year old Emma; plus a farm laborer. They still lived in Amherst. Richard was still a farmer. He and his wife had been born in the Kingdom of Saxony. Hartman" was listed by name. Only the name of the head of each household was written. Others were just indicated by slash marks in columns by their sex and place of birth. The household included one male and three females. They still lived in Amherst. From the October 11, 1879 Stevens Point Journal, a short story mentioning a silver wedding anniversary party for Richard and Wilhelmine Hartmann, from which their marriage date has been learned: Photo The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Hartmann family was enumerated June fifth. The census page shows "J R" "Hartman", 60; his wife, listed as "Anstine W", which meant Ernestine W (for Ernestine Wilhelmina) 54; and two daughters. They still lived in Amherst. Richard was still a farmer. He and his wife had been born in the Kingdom of Saxony. Hartman" was listed by name. Only the name of the head of each household was written. Others were just indicated by slash marks in columns by their sex and place of birth. The household included two males and three females. They still lived in Amherst. The 1895 Wisconsin state census had an effective date of June twentieth. "G.R. Hartman" was listed by name. Only the name of the head of each household was written. Others were just indicated by slash marks in columns by their sex and place of birth. There was one other person in his household, a female, who was his wife. They were both marked as being born in Germany. They still lived in Amherst. No other information was included for the couple.
