Before Portage, in Columbia County, Wisconsin was incorporated as a town about 1856, the area was known as Fort Winnebego. The people living there were enumerated in the 1855 Wisconsin state census. But there was nobody among heads of households with the last name of O'Brien or the last name of Patrick O'Brien's future wife, Toomey.
The 1860 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Patrick O'Brien family was enumerated June thirtieth. The census page shows Patrick O'Brien, 27 (actually 28) a day laborer; his wife Mary, 23; and their daughter Mary, age 10 months. This daughter Mary apparently died by 1868 when the couple named their new daughter Mary Agnes. The O'Brien family lived in Portage, Columbia, Wisconsin, at the time of the 1860 census. Patrick and his wife were born in Ireland, the baby was born in Wisconsin.

The 1870 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The O'Brien family was enumerated June thirtieth. The census page shows Patrick "O'Brine", 36 (actually 38); Mary, 32; five children, including 2 year old Mary (Mary Agnes); plus a farm laborer. They lived in Humboldt, Brown, Wisconsin. Patrick was a farmer. He was born in Ireland, and so was his wife. Two children were listed as being born in Michigan, so the family had moved there two different times, then they returned to Wisconsin each time.
