Notes
a. Note: Notes for Karen Marie Christiansdatter Larsen: The Danish State Archives Filming Centre has photographed old church parish registers, and posted them online. The August 11, 1835, birth record for Karen Marie Christiansdatter has been posted online and is linked to below. The photograph was taken in pure black or white, without any greyscale, so the result is a poor quality image: Photo
She was born in the town of Ejby, in Rye Parish, in the Voldborg District, in Roskilde County, in Denmark. After the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, that location is now the town of Ejby, in Køge Municipality, in Region Zealand, in eastern Denmark.
The 1834, 1840, 1845, and 1850 Danish censuses all lister her name as Karen Marie "Christiansdatter". But the 1860 Danish census listed her name as Karen Marie "Christiansen".
Karen's last name had changed, but she hadn't gotten married. That was either a deliberate change or a mistake. If it was deliberate, it was done because Danish naming conventions had started changing about 1860, and daughters were starting to not have "datter" added to their father's first name to form the daughter's last name, which had been the practice prior to 1860.
Karen's last name being written as Christiansen instead of the name written in previous censuses, Christiansdatter, may just have been a mistake. An online transcription of a baptismal record for Karen's daughter Maren in March of 1861 shows her last name as "Christiansdr", which meant Christiansdatter.
On the other hand, the 1886 Wisconsin marriage record for Karen's daughter Maren shows that Karen's maiden name was stated to have been "Christenson", which is what Karen apparently told Maren that her maiden name was. So with all of this, it still isn't known if Karen Marie deliberately changed her last name from Christiansdatter to Christiansen while she was still in Denmark, or if somebody made her change her last name, or if nobody did instruct her to change it.
Karen's husband Daniel died in 1909.
The 1910 U.S. census had an effective date of April fifteenth. That census listed Karen as "Karrie Larson", a 74-year-old widow. She was living with her son John Larsen/Larson and his wife and children in Belmont, Portage, Wisconsin.
