Note: Notes for Christian Pedersen: The most recent Danish census prior to the 1834 census was the 1801 census. Christian Pedersen would have been about 9 years old. He hasn't been found listed in the 1801 census in Rye Parish, in the Voldborg District, in Roskilde County, Denmark, where he lived when the 1834, 1840, 1845, 1850, and 1860 censuses were recorded. Information in the 1845 census stated that Christian was born in "Lyndbye" Parish in København (Copenhagen) County. But in the list of former in Parishes in København, the name of the Parishes with the spellings most similar to Lyndbye are Lyngby and Lyngbyvej. There wasn't a roughly 9 year old Christian Pedersen listed in Lyndbye in 1801. The 1801 census for Lyngbyvej Parish isn't available online. It may not exist at all. He isn't listed in any of those places with the possible spelling variation of Christen, either. So Christian's exact birthplace hasn't been confirmed. For now, it's just Denmark. The effective date of the 1834 Danish census was February eighteenth. Listed were Christian Pedersen, 42, a laborer; his wife Maren Nielsdatter, 37; their son Jens Christiansen, 14; son Niels Christiansen, 12; and son Hans Christiansen, age two. They lived in the town of Ejby, in Rye Parish, in the Voldborg District, in Roskilde County, in Denmark. After the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, that location is now the village of Ejby, in Køge Municipality, in Region Zealand, in eastern Denmark. Birth places were not listed in this census. The effective date of the 1840 Danish census was February first. Listed were Christian Pedersen, 48, a laborer; his wife Maren Nielsdatter, 43; their son Hans Christiansen, 8; daughter Karen Marie Christiansdatter, 5; daughter Bendte Marie Christiansdatter, age two. They still lived in Ejby. Birth places were not listed in this census. The effective date of the 1845 Danish census was February first. Listed were Christian Pedersen, 53, a laborer; his wife Maren Nielsdatter, 48; their daughter Karen Marie Christiansdatter, 10; daughter Bendte Marie Christiansdatter, 7; and son Ludvig Christiansen, age three. Their son Hans was not listed, so he had probably died. Christian and Maren were listed as being born in Lyndbye Parish in København (Copenhagen) County, but in the list of former in Parishes in København, the name of the Parish with the spelling most similar to Lyndbye is Lyngby Lyngbyvej. The children were all born in Rye Parish in the Voldborg District. The effective date of the 1850 Danish census was February first. Listed were Christian Pedersen, 58; his wife Maren Nielsdatter, 53; their daughter Karen Marie Christiansdatter, 1; daughter Bendte Marie Christiansdatter, 12; and son Ludvig Christiansen, age eight. They still lived in Ejby. The children were all born in Rye Parish. The 1855 Danish census for Rye Parish, in the Voldborg District, in Roskilde County, Denmark, is not available online. It may not exist at all. The effective date of the 1860 Danish census was February first. Listed were Christian Pedersen, 68; his wife Maren Nielsdatter, 63; their daughter Karen Marie Christiansen, 25; and a six-year-old unrelated child who the family were taking care of. They still lived in Ejby. Karen's last name had changed, but she hadn't gotten married. That was either a deliberate change or a mistake. If it was deliberate, it was done because Danish naming conventions had started changing about 1860, and daughters were starting to not have "datter" added to their father's first name to form the daughter's last name, which had been the practice prior to 1860. Karen's last name being written as Christiansen instead of the name written in previous censuses,Christiansdatter, may just have been a mistake. An online transcription of a baptismal record for Karen's daughter in March of 1861, in Copenhagen, shows her last name as "Christiansdr", which meant Christiansdatter. On the other hand, a Wisconsin marriage record for one of Karen's children shows that Karen's maiden name was stated to have been "Christenson". The 1870 Danish census for Rye Parish, in the Voldborg District, in Roskilde County, Denmark, is not available online. It may not exist at all.
