Notes
a. Note: Notes for Daniel Ahern: Daniel Ahern has not been found for certain in the 1880 U.S. census.
The 1890 U.S. census, which probably would have contained Daniel's name and information, was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1921.
On February 26, 1891, Daniel Ahern married "Agnes" Egan, according to their marriage license: Photo
Their church marriage record from Holy Name Cathedral also shows that Daniel Ahern married "Agnes" Egan: Photo
For some unknown reasons, Daniel's wife went by at least four different first names over the course of her life; Agnes on her marriage license and church marriage record, Josephine in the 1910 census, Mary in the 1920 census, and Johanna in the 1930 and 1940 censuses and in obituaries printed for Daniel and herself.
The Daniel Ahern family has so far not been located in the 1900 U.S. census.
The 1910 U.S. census had an effective date of April fifteenth. The Ahern household was enumerated April twenty first. The census page shows Daniel, 44; his wife, "Josephine", 46; and their daughter Ella M., 16. The family lived in a rented residence at 25 W. 59th Street, Chicago. The couple had been married for 19 years. Josephine had given birth to two children, but only Ella was still living in 1910. Daniel was an engineer for a steam railroad. Daniel and his wife were born in New York state, and their parents were born in Ireland. Ella was born in Illinois.

The 1911 Lakeside Annual Directory of the City of Chicago listed: Ahern --Daniel engineer h 23 W 59th
The 1920 U.S. census had an effective date of January first. The census page shows Daniel, 54; his wife "Mary", 56; and their daughter Ella, 25. Also, a Nellie Egan, 54, listed as the sister-in-law of Daniel, was living with the Ahern family. This proves that "Mary's" maiden name was Egan. Also, Egan matches the maiden name for Daniel's wife as seen in both of their obituaries.
The four people lived in a multi-unit building at 5808 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. Daniel was an engineer for a steam railroad, and Ella was a "filer" for a steam railroad. Daniel and Mary were born in New York state, and their unnamed parents were born in Ireland. Ella was born in Illinois.

The 1930 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The Ahern household was enumerated April fourteenth. The census page shows that Daniel, 65, and his wife "Johanna", 66, lived in a home they owned at 1755 W. 100th St., Chicago. Their daughter, Ella, 35; her husband George Crowley, 40; and their children Mary, 7; Robert, 2; and Joan, one year of age, also lived in the home. The value of the home was stated to be $12,000.
Daniel's occupation was a locomotive engineer for a steam railroad. George was a truck driver. Daniel had been 27 years old at the time of his marriage, and Johanna had been 28. Daniel and Johanna were listed as being born in New York state, and their four parents were all born in Ireland.

By the time of the 1940 U.S. census, Daniel and "Johanna" were living in the home of their daughter Ella and her family: Photo
George died a few months after that census was recorded.
Daniel's death notice in the September 6, 1940 Chicago Tribune:
