Note: Notes for Michael Egan: (I have not been able to locate any Egan family member in the 1860 or 1870 U.S. censuses.) The misspelled name "Michal Agan" was written in the 1865 New York state census. He lived in Troy, Rensselaer, New York. Living with him were his wife "Margret", also age 26, and their daughters "Johana",4 and "Elly. 3." The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Michael Egan residence was enumerated June third. Listed were Michael, 42, a policeman; his daughters Johanna, 19; and Ellen (who often went by "Nellie") 18; and Michael's three sons, Daniel, 14; John, 11; and Michael, age nine. Apparently Michael the father's wife Margaret had died during the nine plus years between the birth of young Michael and the 1880 census effective date. All of the children were born in New York state. (The specific location for all five births may have been in Troy, where Johanna is known to have been born.) The father's unnamed parents were listed as having been born in Ireland. The family lived at 5204 S. Butterfield Street, in the Town of Lake. In 1889 Lake was annexed into Chicago. The name of the street was changed and is now Federal Sreet. The Egan family's listing is two thirds of the way down this census page image. You might need to create a fee account at FamilySearch.org to see the photo.
