Note: Notes for Mary (unknown maiden name) Ahern: Mary's husband seems to have been named John. He apparently died in County Limerick, Ireland after less than 20 years of marriage to Mary.
Mary brought her two children - William and John - from County Limerick to the United States in the 1840s.
The three people cannot be found in the 1850 U.S. census.
William settled in New York. More about him is in this chart.
The 1860 U.S. census shows John, his wife Ellen (listed as Ella) and their first child Charles, living in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. Two more children were born in Illinois. John homesteaded in the Nebraska Territory in 1866, the year before Nebraska became a state. The couple had at least five more children there.
The 1870 U.S. census shows Mary - listed as age 54 - (but more likely about 59) living with her son William and his family in Chatham, Columbia, New York.
A transcription of some information from Mary's 1893 Cook County, Illinois death certificate states her age then as 82, which would put her as being born in 1811 or 1812.
