Note: Notes for Thomas Crowley: Thomas was born in Canada. He immigrated into the United States at Detroit, Michigan with his parents and siblings in late 1869 or the first half of 1870. He was listed as an eleven-year-old in the 1870 U.S. census, living with his parents and siblings in Chicago. The 1880 U.S. census shows Thomas, 19, living with his parents and siblings in Chicago. Thomas was a brakeman. On January 1, 1883, Thomas Crowley married Anna Delaney at St. Anne Catholic Church. At that time, that location was south of the Chicago city limit, and was in the Town of Lake. That church was built in 1869 on the southeast corner of Garfield Blvd. and Wentworth Ave. The church was torn down in 1994. A photo of the Crowley - Delaney marriage license: Photo A photo of the Crowley - Delaney marriage record from the church records book: Photo The 1890 U.S. census was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1921, so it isn't known where Thomas and Anna lived in 1890. Chicago city directories listed: 1891; CROWLEY Thomas, switchman, h. es. Jefferson s. 88th 1892; CROWLEY Thomas, lab. h. 8825 S. Jefferson 1894; CROWLEY Thomas, switchman, h. 8825 S. Jefferson 1895; CROWLEY Thomas, switchman, h. 8825 Wallace 1896; CROWLEY Thomas, switchman, h. 8825 Wallace 1897; CROWLEY Thomas condtr. h. 8825 Wallace 1898; CROWLEY Thomas switchman h 8825 Wallace 1899; CROWLEY Thomas condtr h 8825 Wallace Jefferson Street was renamed Wallace Street, so the above listings all refer to the same house. The 1900 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Crowley household was enumerated June fourth. The census page shows Thomas, 38; his wife Annie, 37; and children "May", 16; Blanche, 12; George, 9; and Edgar, seven. (Actually the oldest daughter was named Mary, but she went by Mae.) The family lived in a house at 8825 S. Wallace St., Chicago. Thomas' occupation was a switchman. He was correctly listed as being born in Canada. His year of immigration was given as 1875, but the correct year was actually 1869 or 1870, as the 1870 U.S. census proves. Thomas' father was listed as being born in Ireland, but the correct location was Canada. Thomas' mother was correctly listed as being born in Canada. He had become a naturalized U.S. citizen by 1900. (Or so he thought--see below.) Thomas and Annie had been married for 18 years as of 1900. Annie was born in New York state, and both of her parents had been born in Ireland. Thomas' brother William and his family lived next door, and were listed on the same census page. A photo of that 1900 census page: Photo Thomas and Anna had four children, all born in Chicago: 1) Mary Loretta Crowley, known as Mae, born October 16, 1883. Kortendick. 2) Anna Blanche Crowley, known as Blanche, born September 18, 1887. He was baptized October 19th, at St. Leo the Great Church, Chicago. A photo of his church baptismal record: Photo More about him is in this chart. 4) Edgar Thomas Crowley, born March 7, 1893. Nobody made a birth certificate for Edgar until October 13, 1943, and again on November 1, 1945. Those were called delayed birth certificates. I don't know why two were made. Maybe the first wasn't accurate. Edgar married Laura Josephine Kelly. - A 1902 Chicago directory shows that the Crowley family still lived at 8825 S. Wallace. Thomas was stil listed as a conductor. The 1910 U.S. census had an effective date of April fifteenth. The Crowley household was enumerated May tenth. The census page shows Thomas, 49; Anna D., 44 (the "D" probably stood for Delaney, not an actual middle name); Mae L., 26; the married Blanche A. Kirk, 22; her husband George A. Kirk, 23; George R. Crowley, 20; and Edgar Crowley, 17. They lived at 8631 S. Carpenter St., Chicago. Thomas and Anna had been married for 27 years. Thomas was a yardmaster for a steam railroad. George Crowley was a motorman. A photo of that 1910 census page: Photo The 1920 U.S. census had an effective date of January first. The Crowley household was enumerated January sixth. The census page shows Thomas, 56; Annie, 54; George, 26 (actually 29); and daughter Mae and her husband Henry. They still lived on Carpenter St. Thomas still worked for the railroad. George apparently drove trucks. The 1930 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The Crowley household was enumerated April fourteenth. The census page shows the misspelled name Thomas "Crawley", 68, and Anna, 68. They still lived on Carpenter. Thomas' occupation was a watchman at a garage. On August 2, 1937, Thomas submitted an affidavit to the U.S. District Court in Chicago. That document contains an explanation about why he thought he had become a naturalized U.S. citizen as a child, when his father Timothy had supposedly become naturalized, which would have automatically granted citizenship to Timothy's wife and children: Photo Also on August second, Thomas signed and submitted a Petition for Naturalization document: Photo On November 18, 1937, Thomas signed an Oath of Allegiance document, and he was then deemed a citizen, for possibly the second time: Photo The 1940 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The Crowley household was enumerated April twenty fifth. The census page shows Thomas, 81, a widower, still living at 1300 W. 99th Street. Living with him were his daughter Mary, 56, and her husband Henry. It was written that Thomas had a 6th grade education. Thomas' death notice in the January 9, 1944 Chicago Tribune: Thomas Crowley of 1300 W. 99th street, beloved husband of the late Anna [nee Delaney], loving father of Mrs. Mae Kortendick, Mrs. Blanche Kirk, George and Edgar.
