The 1861 Census of Canada had an effective date of January thirteenth. One census page shows Timothy Crowley, 29; his wife Mary, 23; and children William, 4; Margaret A., 3; and Thomas, one year of age. Timothy was a shoemaker. He was born in Ireland. His wife and children were born in "Canada West", which meant the province of Ontario, in Canada. The family lived in Victoria County. They were listed with people from the Township of Emily, but it was written that the family lived outside of the limits, in the Township of Verulam. The family members were Catholic.

The 1870 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Crowley household wasn't enumerated until July fourteenth. The census page shows Timothy, 40; Mary, 33; William, 13; Margaret, 12; Thomas, 11; and Kate, born in September of 1869.
Kate was listed as being born in Canada, but the 1880 census states she was born in Illinois. Timothy's occupation was a shoe maker. The Crowley family lived at an unstated location in the former Lake Township, also known as the Town of Lake, in Cook County, just south of what was then the southern city limits of Chicago, which was 39th Street. More specifically, the Crowley's lived near the Union Stock Yards, which were centered at what is now 41st St. and Racine Ave.

The 1880 U.S. census had an effective date of June first. The Crowley household was enumerated June twenty fourth. The census page shows "Tim", 45, a shoe maker; Mary, 35; William, 22; Thomas, 19; David, 15; Michael, 13; Timothy, 10, and Kate, also 10. The family names and ages do not exactly match the 1870 census. The family lived at 5037 School Street in Chicago. Tim and Mary were born in Canada, and their four parents were born in Ireland. The places of birth of the children put the family's immigration from Canada between 1867 and 1870.
