Notes
a. Note:   At the age of 5 Johann Gottfried Egydius Bilke's youngest sisted died. When he was 8 years old he lost his oldest sister. he lost his father when he was 10, then his mother died and he became an orphan at the age of 13. At the age of 25, he married Hanna Caroline Hummel and they had three children, but the third child and Hanna Caroline died shortly after the birth when Gottfried was only 30 years old. At the time of Hanna Caroline's death, Gottfried is listed as a day labor (he was not a master of any trade). Four months later Gottfried married Hanna Maria Theile. Gottfried and Hanna Maria had 6 children in Germany, but one died. At the age of 46 (on April 29, 1851) Gottfried, his wife and their 5 living children, and his 2 children from his first marriage, arrived at the Port of New York on the sailing ship Bremin Bark Caroline. The family settled in Sauk County, Wisconsin where their last child was born when Gottfried was 40. Gottfried became a U. S. citizen on February 10, 1857. In 1868 or 1869 the family moved to Newton County, Missouri. Gottfried died in Newton County, Missouri but the date of death has not been found. He is buried in the Cole Cemetery located near Spring City on Eland Road (near Highway 86) in Newton County, Missouri, but the individual markers are missing. There is only one large marker that reads: "BILKE HENCKEL". The English translation of Gottfried is Godfrey and some American records show the name as Godfrey Bilke.
