a. Note:   k of the war, and saw service under his instructor, Stonewall Jackson, and later in the 3rd Va. Cavalry. He was at one time President of the Concord Association, and at the time of his demise was County Chairman of the Anti-Saloon League; member of the Electorial Board of the County, and also of the School Board of his district.
  Brother Betts was a native of Halifax county, and after his marriage to Lucy Baskerville Watkins, came to his late home in Mecklenburg. He is survived by the widow and the following children: Mrs. T. A. Gayle, Union Level, Virginia; R. W. Betts, Asheville, North Carolina; W.S. Betts, Richmond, Virginia; Mrs. D. L. Lewis of Society Hill, North Carolina; and Geo. M. Betts and Miss Julia M., and Nannie C. Betts, of this place. A member of the widely known Betts family, of Halifax county, he is survived also by a number of brothers and sisters, among them being Rev. J. T. Betts, of Litchfield, Kentucky. Funeral services and interment at Ephesus, conducted by his pastor, J. W. Davies.
