Note: [CraigJamesDesc.ftw] (from ?, Monday, April 1, 40?) --- MR. M. M. CRAIG DEAD ---------------------------- Donn Byrne's Widow Bereaved ------------------------------ London, Monday. --There is much sympathy here with Mrs. Dorothea Craig on the death of her husband, Mr. M. M. (Paddy) Willoughby Craig, which took place at Gloucester a few days ago. Mrs. Craig is the widow of Donn Byrne, the noted Irish novelist, of Coolmain Castle, Co. Cork. Deceased was the son of Mrs. Craig, of Kingsdown, Deal, Kent and of the late Mr. James Craig, of the Glen House, Crawfordsburn, Co. Down. Mrs. Craig had two daughters by her first marriage. The elder is the wife of Lieut. M. E. J. Hoos, of the Royal Artillery, while the second is a talented actress. ------------------------------ (Explanatory note for above clipping by Marshall Craig, 7/25/2001) Marshall Moore Willoughby Craig: Son of James Craig & Annie Rosina Taylor. MMW Craig married Dorothea Byrne (Dolly Donn Byrne). Donn Byrne was an Irish writer/novelist. He lived in Coolmaine Castle, which is about 7 miles west of Bandon. (the castle is currently owned by one of the Disney's!) I have read somewhere that Donn Byrne bought the Castle (a small Irish Castle) with winnings from a card game while on holiday in the South of France after the 1st world war. he came to live there with his wife and children and continued to write. From what I remember, he (Donn Byrne) died following a car accident coming home one night from Courtmacsherry, when his car went off the road and into the sea. The castle was sold and Dolly (his widow) moved to England. I'm not sure when she married MMW Craig. However, I think that MMW Craig may have worked for Donn in some capacity possibly as a secretary. I have spoken to somebody who remembers seeing MMW Craig taking Donn & Dolly's children swimming a number of times, so really I'm not sure. My grandfather's first cousin, Rev John Craig, told me that he saw MMW Craig a few times in Bandon, but never had any contact with him. He remembered him as being very affluent. I don't know if MMW Craig ever contacted my grandfather, Marshall Moore Craig as he died 1963 a couple of years before I was born.
