Note: (Research):BA Oxford 1873, MA 1877, MB 1877; FRCS Eng 1877; LSA 1876. Southam, the son of George Southam and the father of Arthur Hughes Southam, was born in Manchester on 17 May 1850. He studied medicine at Oxford, Owens College and St Bartholomew's Hospital. Southam held a succession of resident surgical appointments at MRI and was appointed assistant surgeon in 1880 and then surgeon in 1889. Southam was lecturer at Owens College in surgery and was made professor of clinical surgery in 1901, he was best known for his genito-urinary work. Southam was president of the Manchester Pathological Society in 1894 and of the Manchester Medical Society in 1895. He was later consulting surgeon at MRI, the Northern Hospital and the Jewish Hospital and was surgeon at Christie Hospital.
