Notes
a. Note:   She was known as "Mawmaw" by her great grandchildren. In the early 1950's she fell down the steps at Willa's house and broke her hip. She never walked again. Rather cantankerous in her later years, she had a reputation with the kids at home and in the neighborhood. If a ball went came into the yard from next door, it was not to be returned. She sat on the porch for hours just watching the cars go by. To pass the time, she crocheted rugs from narrow long pieces of flannel. Her daughter, Willa, took care of her day and night after she couldn't walk until just prior to her death.
In November 2004, Tammy Annette Harris Valverde said she was 6 when she had the measles and her mother took her to Willa Cole's where Mattie Kennedy Miller was living. Mattie's death was attributed to complications of measles.
In May 2016, an unidentified photograph of a young woman sitting in front of a stone walk with a garden beyond was found among a small collection in a candy box offered for scanning by Tammy Harris Valverde. Janice Hooper Cole recognized the woman as Mattie, citing the distinctive shape of her legs.
