Note: After her first husand died, she returned to her parents home near Keysburg and lived there for a year and a half. Nellie worked hard raising her three sons. She had grown up on a farm and taught Mayo how to raise crops and cure tobacco. When she went to town shopping on Saturdays, she was always thoughtful of Billy Reno Boley and brought him equally anything she had for her sons, Paul and Earl. On 11 February 1940, she walked from her home to see her son Mayo on his birthday when he was living nearby at the farm. In 2004, my mom said she could still remember Grannie Mac "coming down the road, walking with her hands behind her back." She was well known for her cooking. At Christmas, she made the best cocoanut cakes in the world, according to Clyo. Richard Mallory praised her cooking decades later. On his death bed, Mayo recalled her biscuits and molasses. In 2006, Donnie McIntosh told how he loved her biscuits. Once when he'd been called to go back home, he went to the kitchen and stuffed his pockets with them. Before he got away, his grandfather noticed they were gone and said, "There won't be any biscuits to eat with brakfast!" She told him to let Donnie have them, saying "Now Bub, you know I'll cook you some more..." She got a cabinet from Mrytle that later was left to Mayo Jr. The hand bell she used to call the workers from the field was passed from her family to Mayo and Clyo and later to Gary and Jo. On one occasion, Mayo made fun of his step-father's eating with a large group of family at the table. Mr. McIntosh had trouble with his false teeth and often got food on his face. Nellie, obviously displeased with her son's manners, left the room without explanation. When she returned, she gave my father a hand mirror and told him "before you make fun of someone else, you should see how you look when you eat!" This story was re-told Hines McIntosh's daughters years later. Myrtle Mallory Rager often said Mayo was "just like Grannie Mac." When Nellie was on her death bed, her sons and their families gathered at her side. My mother held me for her to see. Being the youngest at only four months old, Mom prodded her to say she loved me best. Nellie replied, "I love them all the same." James Mayo Violette's birth certificate, issued after her death, incorrectly lists her middle name as "Hillman". http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ky/county/todd/vital/dcertif.htm#2448 Nellie HERNDON McINTOSH Death Certificate Number: 15124 Sex: F Race: White Martial status: Married Date of Birth: June 23, 1886 Place: Kentucky, USA Age: 65 years Date of Death: June 27, 1951 Place of Death: (At home) Allensville, Todd County, KY Father's name: R.T.
